century' with a text in it. (Must have been difficult in those pre-digital days to get a text into a photo with darkroom techniques rather than printing techniques. Probably a slide of white letters on a completely black background copied into the large photo. But that was not the point of my blog entry.)

His text is indeed a question about the truth in photography: what is "in" a picture? What is its relation to reality? How external is what we see in a picture? These are not easy questionswere not easy in the analogous days, and have become more complicated in the digital days in some (but not in all) respects. It is too late in the day for me to even try to approach the question intellectually. Perhaps Van Alphen was not so crazy when he tried to do it with a photo surrounding his text. Roland Barthes' 'Camera lucida' with his musings on the photo of his deceased mother are not a very readable alternative... Strange that death plays a role in Van Alphen's picture as much as in Barthes' classic text on photography. Or has Van Alphen read Barthes'text? For although we see only the 'external intensity' of the photo, it may lead to the thought of where it came from: what was the photographer trying to tell us? Why was s/he trying to tell us precisely this? That is where Van Alphen's reading on photography may come into play.

Even more to muse upon, when the evening gets still later.

Almost six years ago, when I was 13, I broke my radius and my ulna in my wrist playing basketball. It was a simple fracture and did not need to be set or anything; all I needed was a long arm cast for three weeks. My wrist always ached slightly like right before it rained or if it was damp outside, but lately its been hurting every time I lift things or twist my wrist, like when Im driving. Its not really that painful, its just uncomfortable and Im only concerned because Im starting to notice it more and more. Has this happened to anyone before, or does anyone have any ideas on what this is? Thanks.

That happens sometimes. When bone and/or cartilage/tendons gets damaged, it can effect you for the rest of your life. The problem is that theres not much soft tissue in write/hand so every damage to it has an impact. And I know exactly what you mean about how it hurts more when it rains. I get the same thing. I broke my wrist and dislocated my thumb when I was 14 and every since then, with every year that goes by, the pain is more frequent. Before itd just hurt if I did something to aggravate it but now it hurts without any reason.
Go to a doctor and get it checked out. My ONE injury, although it wasnt serious, did enough damage to tendons (which like cartilage, heal VERY slowly and scar easily) gave me tendinitis and I got diagnosed with arthritis in that hand when I was 24.
After my injury, when pain/discomfort started getting more frequent, I did a couple of courses of physical therapy, which did helpbut only for like 3 months. Due to swelling I get I also did cortisone shot, but those did very little for me.
Lidocaine patches are awesome though.

These days online Hold em and online sports betting have taken the world by storm. Everyone is getting in on the action, including women. Studies have shown that women now represent a very large portion of the online gamblers. Many women now feel comfortable going on popular sites like PartyPoker and Absolute poker to play a couple hands of Hold em. In casinos and tournaments they often feel pressured and nervous when making decisions Mark Parry of Daily Poker News
With the craze sweeping the country, some very important questions need to be addressed. Many online gaming companies are being born over night and offering customers very attractive sign up bonuses. Often times these casinos are not legitimate and are only looking to scam you out of your money. One very important thing when choosing your site is to see how reliable that site is. Some things to look for are good customer service, percentage pay out and also cash out reliability. One very effective way to see how these casinos and sport betting sites compare is to use some of the websites that offer a side-by-side comparison of the casinos.
As one of those companies we offer up to the date information on what casinos, poker rooms and sports betting sites can be trusted. These sites are independently tested by staff of Avoid Online Poker Scams AOPS. Users of our site also submit their experiences with these sites which we factor into the ratings. With over 5000 unique visitors to the site each day, many people have avoided being scammed by illegitimate casinos and poker rooms.

Once you get into hockey as an adult beginner youll quickly realize how special it is to be on the ice in full equipment in a practice situation. And of course I was reminded of this last night at the first night of the  City of Ottawa adult beginners courses.
This time last year, I was put on my equipment for the first time for the Level 1 courses. This year, its the level 2 courses I am taking. So in some ways it was like marking an anniversary for me. Since starting last October, the longest I have gone without being on the ice is 14 days. 14 days! Thats pretty crazy, isnt it?
Anyways, last night was mostly review of basic skating and skills stuff. But it was the first time I had been on the ice with a stick and puck since I had received the excellent Sean Skinner DVDs on stick handling. To be able to actually be handling a puck along the ice as opposed to a weighted ball on my basement floor was both terrifically enjoyable — but very also sobering!
The bottom line is that no matter how much doing drills with a weighted ball on a hard surface can improve your coordination, quickness, and strength, it is simply not the same as a puck on the ice. And let me say this too:  sure, it is only a small rubber disc, but to stand and go through some basic handling drills is pretty damn tiring! Certainly more tiring than standing in my basement.

Stephen Strasburg, who remains the top-rated prospect with his draft year set to play out, and Washington could instead go with a "signable" pick? Strasburg could decide he doesn't want to spend the beginning of his career in the NL East's basement and head down to Ft. Worth to sweat out a season...Positive thoughts, positive thoug...?
3) On a somewhat serious note,I'm thankful that last winter the Washington Nationals took chances on some players who were considered a risk because of their "volatile" personalities, and I'm thankful that, for the most part, with a few missteps, admittedly, the players rewarded the team's faith with significant contributions to the small successes the team and its fans did enjoy this past season.
Sure I watched 98 or so of 102 losses, but it was still fun...
What are you thankful for, Nationals' fan? I'll add any contributions to the list with a credit if anyone leaves anything in the Comments section. Enjoy the holiday...
?'s To Ponder...Do you think the Nationals should trade Nick Johnson? NEW POLL!!! What do you think the Nationals' next big move will be? Sign Odalis Perez? Find another veteran lefty? Who would you want from the A's for Nick Johnson? Do you believe the Nationals will sign Mark Teixeira?
end transmission.

LucisArt 3 was incredible image-processing software that professional photographers and digital artists have used for years to quickly and easily create beautiful artist effects.

LucisArt 3 has
1) greatly increased ability to fine-tune how you enhance detail,
2) the ability to save user-defined presets,
3) improved output image quality, and
4) an improved, scalable user interface. LucisArt 3 processes 8-bit grayscale and RGB color images.

LucisArt 3 Benefits:
Creativity: With LucisArt you will quickly and easily explore the creative potential of your image. Once you see a version of your image that you like you may be able to determine how to approximately duplicate that LucisArt artistic effect using other methods. But that is time consuming. And you would not know that the LucisArt version of your image was even possible except for LucisArt revealing it to you. Use LucisArt multiple times or in conjunction with other image processing methods to even further expand the variety of artistic effects.

Time savings: Professional photographers need to quickly repair images and create salable artistic effects. LucisArt lets you quickly explore your image and see what it could become. You will create artistic effects in a few minutes that would take much longer to even approximately achieve with other image processing methods (if those artistic effects could be achieved at all). This could save hours of image-processing time for professionals processing a few dozen images.

Effectively no learning curve: The LucisArt controls are intuitive and easy to use. There is no manual. Create your first LucisArt image in as little as 5 minutes.

Value: Professional photographers are looking to differentiate themselves from their primary competition - their customers. In addition to the time savings, professional photographers could charge for adding LucisArt special effects and secure artistic image sales from customers no longer interested in purchasing realistic photography.

Jhonny Nunez.
Comments: I have to admit that I don't understand this trade from the vantage point of the Sox unless it is mostly about dumping salary.
With respect to the two major leaguers in the deal, Swisher is clearly better than Betemit. While the former had the worst season of his four-year career in 2008, he was still more productive than the latter. Swisher ranked last in batting average among players with at least 502 plate appearances, yet walked 82 times and slugged 24 home runs. His decline in AVG is solely attributable to a career-low BABIP of .251, which looks like an aberration given the fact that his batted ball data were, more or less, in-line with his career marks. If anything, his better-than-ever line-drive rate (20.9%) should have produced a somewhat higher rather than lower BABIP and AVG.
Betemit drew six bases on balls while whiffing 56 times (or once every 3.5 trips to the plate) last year. Since joining the Yankees during the 2007 season, the utility infielder has drawn 12 walks against 89 strikeouts for a horrific BB/SO rate of .135, perhaps suggesting that he has been overmatched in the AL East.
Only a year separates the two switch hitters in age. While Betemit may be slightly more valuable as an infielder than Swisher is as a corner outfielder and first baseman, his size realistically limits him to third and first and his bat just doesn't play all that well at either position. As such, he is basically nothing more than a backup, a fungible spot on a big-league roster. Eligible for arbitration, Betemit will probably "earn" $1.5-2.0M this season.
Swisher has three years remaining on a five-year, $26.75 million contract. He will make $5.3M in 2009, $6.75M in 2010, and $9M in 2011. His deal also includes a $10.25 million club option for 2012, with a $1 million buyout. At an average of $7.35M per season, Swisher is reasonably priced and a bargain if he can return to his 2006-2007 production.

My Team and I are based in the Austin and Highland Lakes areas of the Central Texas Hill Country where affordable housing is still available, so we are fortunate to have many potential first home buyers. Recently, one of my buyer's agents, Brooke, and I worked with a First Time Buyer in the Austin area.
Let's call our Buyer, John. John and I had spoken about 1 year ago about his desire to buy a property, but at the time, John felt he many have some credit issues. So, we talked about it, I sent him to a mortgage broker who pulled his credit and we all identified the problems together. After some discussion, we let John know a few things that he should do over the next 12 months in order to improve his credit rating and his chances of qualifying for a loan with a good rate.
When we work with a buyer, we feel that our mortgage professional is part of our team as we all work together towards a common goal - finding a home for our first time buyer, getting them qualified and starting them on the path of Home Ownership!.
Over the next year John improved his credit rating, cleaned up a few things that needed to be removed, paid his bills on time and didn't over-extend himself with respect to credit...in other words, he didn't keep buying a lot of high ticket items on credit (car, tv, stereo, etc) that would have impacted his credit rating or available credit. After the year passed, John had raised his credit rating to about 640, which is a number that our local lender could work with.
John completed an application and received a pre-qualification letter - an important piece of paper to have, particularly when you are a first time buyer. We decided that an FHA loan was the best option with 3% down and our plan was to get the Seller to pay maximum closing costs. Our search for the perfect home began! Of course, we talked about what was important to John - location, size, type of property, ideal price, etc. We had a basis to start with.
We started sending listings to John by email so he could review them and he would do the occasional drive-by if he thought he might be interested. Eventually we came up with a short-list to go view. We chose a day, made appointments and started out day. It was clear after a few showings, that John's "ideal" home was getting more refined as we looked. By the end of the day, both he and Brooke (buyer's agent) had a good idea of what would work for him.
There was one condo property that stood out from the rest - it was a recently converted apartment unit close to downtown that was refurbished and basically "brand new" - new appliances, new flooring, new look totally. The price, however, was right at the upper edge of John's price range. So, again, we sat down and calculated what payments would be, closing costs etc. We prepared to make an offer, knowing that it was important that we get some concessions from the Seller to pay for closing costs.
After careful consideration, John decided that even though this was his "ideal" home, he was uncomfortable with putting himself at the top of his range. He was concerned with maxing himself out and being worried about every penny. At that point, we knew we had to fnd a home that had a slightly lower price tag so he could feel good about his decision. Remember, if you are the buyer, you should be in the driver seat. Ultimately, it is you who will make the monthly payments, not your realtor! You should feel great about your decision.
We searched some more and broadened our search area slightly. A great property emerged that we thought John would love and the price was right. It was a great 1 story condo unit with a fenced patio, vaulted ceilings, in a community with excellent maintenace, beautiful trees and a community pool. John and I went to look at the unit. It was love at first sight!
By listening to what was important to my Buyer, both in his needs and wants and accessing his criteria, we only wound up looking at only 7 properties before this one was found.
We made the offer, it was accepted and loan processing began. Yes, it is tedious, yes, you have to provide a lot of information, and yes, it might even feel invasive. But, the rewards are so worthwhile when you move into your very own home! It's a new beginning and the start of building equity for your future in a property that is yours to enjoy.
Brooke John worked hard over the next 45 days with getting building inspections, repairs done, wading through the mortgage paperwork needed etc. At last, closing occured and John was a proud homeowner in his very own home! It was a pleasure for both Brooke and I to be able to assist and help experience the joy of someone buying their first home.

The Austin and Highland Lakes area around Marble Falls Burnet offer many affordable housing opportunities, and besides FHA loans, there are special loan packages available for Teachers, Police, EMS, Fire Professionals, there are USDA loans for more rural properties and some amazing mortgages opportunities through the Texas Veterans Land Board for Texas Vets.

Visit our First Time Buyer website at www.TexasFirstHomeBuyer.com for more information. We love helping people find the joy of owning their own first homes.

How to Pick the Correct Projector for Your Home Theater
Youre finally making the jump to the holy grail of home theater video displays; the front projection system. Theres nothing else that delivers that really big, impressive video image like a front projection system. Its how you get that real cinema experience in your home theater. Home theater projector prices have plummeted in recent years, and the size of the units have shrunk right along with the prices. No more do have to live with a coffin sized box on your ceiling. As sizes have decreased, the image quality and brightness have actually improved dramatically. Youll notice image quality and brightness are two separate issues.
How do choose the correct home theater projector for your application from the myriad of projectors on the market today? There are so many different units, each with their strengths and weaknesses. First of all, there are two main projection technology categories, analog and digital. Analog projectors are based on CRTs, a mature technology thats been around for decades. Those are the projectors with the separate red, green and blue picture tubes and three lenses on the front. The other projectors use one of the newer digital technologies. These projectors have a single lens on the front. There are three major types of digital projectors on the market today; LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), DLP (Digital Light Processing) and LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon). Each type of digital projector has its advantages too.
You need to evaluate your specific requirements in order to make the proper decision. First of all, look at the room. Is it a dedicated home theater or a multi use room? Do you have complete control of the light? What aesthetic concerns are you dealing with? What is your projector budget? How large of an image do you want? Do you watch primarily DVD movies, TV movies, sports, or other TV programming? What specific source components will you be using with your projector now or in the future? Is picture quality the most important thing, or are other concerns, such as noise, size or brightness more important? Are you installing the projector yourself, or are you hiring a custom installer to do the installation for you? Where must the projector be placed? Can you get the required video and control cables to that location? These questions must be answered to ensure you get the proper projector for your home theater. If you are using a custom installer, they will take into account these factors and specify the appropriate unit for you.
Dramatic improvements in the picture quality of digital projectors notwithstanding, CRT projectors still deliver the most film like image. They have no pixel structure and deliver rich, deep blacks. Properly set up and calibrated, with a good video processor, and with the proper size screen, a CRT projector will deliver simply stunning picture quality. Youll need to use a good quality projection screen, typically with 1.3 - 2.5 gain depending upon the size, viewing angel and ambient light in the room. Prices on really great CRT projectors have fallen like a rock in the last year or two. You can get a 9 CRT projector that used to cost $35,000 to $50,000, for less than a third of that figure now. Many firms no longer make CRT projectors due to the decreased demand for projectors using this technology. In addition, the required video processors have decreased dramatically as well. Ten years ago a great video processor used to cost $10,000 to $20,000. Now you can get one for well under $5,000 and as little as $2,000, brand new. They also easily last 8,000 - 10,000 hours when properly set up.
If they are so fantastic, why doesnt everybody still use CRT projectors? Well, there are many detriments to a CRT projector as well. The best ones, with the 9 tubes, are simply huge. Its like hanging an upside down bathtub on your ceiling. If you want to put one under a coffee table, itll be one large table. They are also very heavy, around 150 - 200lbs, so you need the proper structure to support them. CRT projectors also require precise placement. They must be perfectly square with the screen, at the correct elevation for good picture quality. In addition, while many digital projectors have zoom lenses, allowing the projector to be placed at a range of distance from the screen, CRT projectors must be at a very precise distance for a specific screen size. These factors severely limit placement options. While the larger CRT projectors put out more light than their smaller counterparts, they have pretty dim images compared to even the least expensive digital projectors. Finally, CRT projectors require specialized setup in order to get a watchable, much less an optimum image. Every 6 months to a year, they must be re-calibrated to ensure you are still getting optimum picture quality.
There are some very good reasons why most people are using digital projectors in their home theaters today. Many are small and light, require minimal setup and calibration (compared to a CRT), are quiet and have a bright, sharp image. But, there are many different digital projectors, ranging in price from around $700.00 to over $100,000.00. Which one is the best for your specific application? Thankfully, the situation is changing, but many of the digital projectors marketed for home theater use are really just re-badged presentation units. Presentation projectors sacrifice good video quality for brightness. Brightness is much more important when giving a Powerpoint presentation in a lit room than the correct color palate or the black level. The red on the pie chart looks great, no matter what, as long as you can see it from the back row.
You want to choose one of the newer units that has been truly designed for home theater applications. The actual technology used for the imaging chip is not all that important, there are great examples using all three of the digital technologies. Companies such as Sony, Runco, InFocus, Vidikron, Marantz, Benq, Panasonic, Sharp, Optima and Sanyo and some others all make great home theater projectors. The projector will have great black levels, to accurately reproduce detail in the darker areas of the picture and give great contrast. Absolute brightness is not extremely important, unless you have a multi-use room without complete light control or you have a lot of people over for sporting events. If you are entertaining many people for sports, its nice to have some light on in the room, so a brighter projector is advantageous.
Projectors come in a number of different resolutions. The lower the resolution, the smaller the screen you can use before you can see pixel structure. Also, the lower resolutions will not support true HDTV. Most will display HD, but at a decreased resolution. The lowest end projectors typically have resolutions of 800 x 600. The Texas Instruments Matterhorn chip is popular on budget priced wide screen projectors, and has a resolution of 1024 x 576. Anything over a resolution of 720 will allow for true HDTV. The TI series of HD-2 DLP chips has a resolution of 1280 x 720. In April of 2005, TI announced new DLP chips with 1920 x 1080 was ready for production, allowing for true 1080p resolutions. Projectors with this chip will begin shipping in Q1 of 2006. Blu-Ray Disc has stated they will support 1080p, so by late 2006 there will be commercially available 1080p content besides Microsofts WMHD discs.
Another very important aspect of home theater projectors is the internal video processing. This is one of the primary differences between good home theater projectors and presentation projectors. Digital projectors must display progressive scan images at the native resolution of the chip, so any interlaced signal, such as 1080i HDTV, must be de-interlaced and then scaled to the native chip resolution. Poor quality video processors, weather in the projector or external units, cause all sorts of video artifacts that can get in the way of a satisfying video presentation. This subject alone is too in depth for this article, as entire texts have been written on the subject. However, one common video artifact is where diagonal lines are jagged instead of straight. Another annoying artifact caused by poor video processing is moire. This is a pattern seen as alternating light and dark lines that change position as the image moves.
Youll want to be sure your projector supports the HDMI or DVI with HDCP copy protection to allow you to connect a HD-DVD, scaling DVD player or Blu-Ray Disc player. These devices will only allow maximum resolution on a display that has a digital video input with HDCP copy protection. In the future, cable TV and satellite providers may restrict the maximum resolution to their digital outputs too.
When choosing your new home theater projector, make sure it has the video quality, brightness, size, auditory and budget characteristics that you need. Projectors are a large investment, choose carefully and you will be rewarded with years of thrilling video in your home theater.

The following Forrest Gump Quotes Can Make You A Better Basketball Coach.

- Im not a smart man but I know what love is.

Dont fool yourself into thinking that your technical knowledge of the game is the only measuring stick of your coaching ability. Theres more to it than that. Your players need to know that your first priority is their best interests. How you demonstrate that you care will vary according to your personality and situation, but the bottom line isintelligence isnt everything. Coaching basketball is not a chess match. Those are people youre leading. They wont run through walls for you until they know that you care.

- Stupid is as stupid does.

Judge your players based on what they show younot on what other people say or on any preconceived notions about their ability, decision-making, or character.

- When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go you know I went.

Your job as coach is to Give them what they need to know, not to show them everything that you know. Be responsive to your teams learning threshold. Adding plays and schemes progressively, as your players and team develop, is good coaching. Putting in 17 different time-and-score schemes with players who still have not learned how to set or use a screen is intellectual self-gratification. Momma always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.

If your players arent able to take what you give them and transfer it onto the floor, its time to consider how to change your teaching methods so that you are communicating in a way that players can understand.

What you know is not nearly as important as your ability to get players to take what you know and do something productive with it.

- I gotta save Bubba!

Two Points:

1. One surefire way to get loyalty is to give it. If your players feel that, re all in this together " in this context MUST include , the coach - your players will usually be responsive to you, and loyal. This is an important element on teams with lesser talent " the ones that cause the coach to worry about losing players because there arent enough wins in a season to justify the coachs demands. If your players know that youre in it with them, theyll play hard for you even if youre losing. With that in place you can continue to teach and to push players beyond their comfort zones (which you have to be able to do if youre coaching a mediocre team " if you dont, the losing wont ever stop).

2. The bunker mentality is an extremely powerful motivator, can help forge a teams identity, and often leads a team to new heights. Example: Can you name the only team to rise to championship levels in the Jordan, Magic, Bird era besides the Bulls, Lakers, and Celtics? The Bad Boys.

- Jenny taught me how to climb. And I taught her how to dangle.

You can learn just as much from your players as they can learn from you. My personal experience is that I never realize this until after the fact. But I always realize it, with every player and every team I coach.

- My Momma always said youve got to put the past behind you before you can move on.

Holding a grudge against a payer in your program is a waste of energy and does nothing to improve that player or your program.

Try to clear the slate every day with your players and team. If you had a horrible practice yesterday that ended with you kicking everybody out of the gym, put it behind you. Youll save yourself a lot of needless grief and will usually be surprised to find that tomorrow isnt nearly as bad as today. Your interactions with your team should be based on what they are doing right now. Practice this consistently and, over time, players will come to understand that you are criticizing their actions, rather than who they are as people.

- Momma always said, Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get.

Every team has a different personality, set of strengths, and collective potential. Try to coach to your teams strengths and work to identify weak spots " they will differ from team to team.

Also, hold your team to a standard of playing to its maximum potential every day. Each team sets its own unique standard. Holding one team to a standard set by another group of players can be unrealistic and, in certain situations, unfair.

- Thats all I have to say about that.

No, seriously. Thats it. Enjoy HoopClinics!

Professor Thom's (including yours truly) into a tizzy of desperate anticipation: what sort of Beckett would we be getting tonight?

Ducked my head under, started to drift/Let the tide take me and down I went/I saw great wonders shunned from above/I saw blind monsters twisted in love/No deliverance
Fortunately, the Sox seemed to have (finally) anticipated Beckett's potential malaise on the mound: his fastball speed dropped a good five miles an hour after Upton's home run and the man with the fireball arm suddenly became a junkballer, throwing curveballs and cutters and low-90s fastballs with just enough bite on them to keep the Rays low on the board through five. It wasn't the prettiest performance and it was certainly far from the dominance that brought Beckett to Boston, but it the job done.

And when I saw her, bathed in light/A host of angels knelt at her side
Meanwhile, "Big Game James" was anything but: four pitches into the second, Youkilis answered Upton's home run with a deep fly of his own, sending the crowd - a mix of diehards, pink hats, and douchebags of various stripes (so help me God, if Professor Thom's falls victim to its own success and I have to watch another game with such a group of poseurs, standing around blocking the view on the screens while they chat amongst themselves, I will be forced to firebomb. There's nothing worse in sports than a bandwagon fan with no substance. I'm pretty sure I was getting dirty looks from one woman in front of me for clapping, for chrissake. You don't like it? Don't go to an effing sports bar!) into extacies and setting up a push that connected firmly to another run scoring drive by Pedroia, Ortiz, and Youkilis in the third. As Shield's pitch count mounted, the Sox started to circle in the water, never quite taking the big bad bite but doing enough damage to keep all of Tampa Bay's relief corps on their toes.

(First in what may prove to be a series on the math of fantasy sports. Disclaimer: I am not a statistician, so consider this to be on the level of a "Dummies" book.)

So you've made a deposit into Fantasy Sports Live. A question that may immediately come to mind is "how many contests should I play?"

Let me answer your question with a question: "How much risk are you comfortable with?"

Assume, first of all, that you have determined the amount that you're going to put in play for the day's set of contests (1). Let's say, for example, that you've decide that you're going to play $22 worth of football contests.

In that case, your choices are one $22 contest, two $11 contests or four $5.50 contests (yes, theoretically you could play twenty-two $1 contests, but let's be real here).

Next, assume that you have an edge and that edge is consistent. You're an educated fantasy football player, which gives you an edge of 55% to win, 45% to lose in any given contest. (2)

Third, assume that you play heads up contests. (3)

If you put your entire roll on one contest, you have a 55% chance of winning $40 (plus $18 net) and a 45% chance of losing $22 (minus $22 net).

If you decide to play two contests, you have a 30.25% chance of winning $40 (plus $18 net), a 49.50% chance of "winning" $20 (minus $2 net) and a 20.25% chance of losing $22 (minus $22 net).

If you play four contests, you have a 9.15% chance of winning $40 (plus $18 net), a 29.95% chance of winning $30 (plus $8 net), a 36.75% chance of "winning" $20 (minus $2 net), a 20.05% chance of "winning" $10 (minus $12 net) and a 4.10% chance of losing $22 (minus $22 net). (4)

We can draw two obvious conclusions from this very simplistic example:

1. When you spread your bankroll over more contests, your risk of ruin (losing it all) is reduced. In this example, you've 45% likely to "go broke" on 1 contest, only 4.1% likely if you play four.

2. Conversely, the more contests you play, the less likely it is that you will make the big score -- less than a 10% chance of coming out plus $18 over four contests vs. 55% in one.

Also (but not obvious, given the simplistic example), once you get beyond one contest, the more contests played - assuming the same edge - the greater the probability that you will turn a net profit.

The takeaway? If you're trying to build a bankroll in a hurry, you'd generally be better off playing fewer, higher buy in contests (IF you can maintain the same edge). If you're more concerned with going broke, spreading your buyin over more contests is the way to go.

More thoughts on this subject to come.

Notes:

(1) The portion of your "bankroll" that you should put into play in any given week is an entirely different subject, and one which I hope to touch on in another post.

(2) Maximizing your edge is also a subject for another post. This is groundwork right here. I realize that it's extremely simplistic to assume that your edge will always be the same - in the real world, it never is, in large part because you'll pretty much never be playing the same opponent with the same lineups.

(3) For the sake of simplicity. The math gets harder if we're talking 6 or 10 player contests.

(4) It may also be worth noting that in this example your expected value - expected return - in each case is exactly the same, $22. This is a function of both consistent assumptions and the proportionately identical 'rake' charged by the site.

Ive only been playing poker for three years. In this day, the learning curve is a lot quicker than it used to be with the amount of books and access to online poker. Me, Im not one thats big on theory. It may sound strange to someone who is an avid player, but I rely more on instincts and reads.

I do the whole pot odds things and calculate. I make certain knowing I am going to get paid off in the end, but Ive always been more interested in the history of the game. Poker evolved from a back room, hustlers game to a mainstream pop culture reference, which I am now a statistic.

While in Los Angeles, I had to take the opportunity to play poker. There are hundreds of card rooms in this great state and hearing the stories and history behind these places, I had no choice.

The tiny poker player in me was calling, tugging me toward the Commerce.

It was dingy, musty and probably moldy from the looks from it.

It was perfect.

Poker came alive in that room. There was history there although many of the players on the lower limit side werent thinking about that. They were flinging their chips into pots with greater than I have ever witnessed.

Now, revealing Ive only played for the last few years, Im not a bankroll where I play in big games. Im still at the kiddie table, playing $1-$2 NL in Atlantic City. I didnt know what that translated into in the structure in California.

I chose the $200 buy-in game because I always buy in for $200 in A.C. Apparently, these games arent on the same level. Their $1-$2 NL was a $40 fixed buy-in. Even if I had known that, I probably wouldnt have jumped into that game anyway. A $40 buy-in doesnt give you much room to work with.

$3-$5 blinds. That was the game I was in. A little over my head and lots of loose player, who apparently dont care about theory either. Pot odds? To hell with that too. These guys were just interested in getting as much money into the middle of the pot and stacking chips.

Normally, in this type of situation theorist say the looser the game, the tighter. I ended up beating these guys at their own game while following my basic rules. I didnt get my chips into the pot with a bad starting hand just because that was their move. I started with a decent holdings, I just made my requirements a little lower.

I was stuck in the game for $400 and down to my last $50 before I got the hang of it. A lesson learned quickly, but expensively.

Good thing Bluffmaster Deuce (he was sitting in the two seat) sat down. This guy was the easiest read on the game. When he had a hand, he bet roughly of the pot. When he bluffed, he doubled the size of the pot. If there was $40 in the pot, then he bet $80.

I got back to even on his bluffs alone. My pair of deuces? Way good when he bet $40 into a $20 pot. My open-ended straight draw when he bet $80 into a $40? Money.

Finally, after four hours of play, I got back to even. I planned to leave when the blinds hit me. However, while under the gun, I looked down to black Kings. I raised $25 (standard) and four people called me.

FOUR!

The flop comes 4-K-5, rainbow. But being in early position and lots of people behind me, 6-7 and 3-4 are definitely hands I see these people calling with. I bet $60, I get one caller. The turn is an ace. I bet $150, he mucks. Missed his open-ender he says. Awesome.

I went home up $150 after being stuck $350. I felt like I won $1,000.

Jammu, Nov 4 (IANS) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and MP Mehbooba Mufti Tuesday said her party would decentralise power at the grass roots level in Jammu and Kashmir if voted to power.
During her campaigning in the Jammu region, Mufti addressed public meetings in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.

The PDP has fielded Tassaduq Hussain and Choudhary Zulfikar from two constituencies of Rajouri.

#39I assure you that if you vote the PDP to power with an absolute majority, we will get you the maximum powers at the grass roots level. Rajouri and Poonch will have hill development councils, #39 Mehbooba said underlining the basics of self-rule, part of the PDP #39s manifesto.

She said the development councils will be on the pattern of Leh and Kargil, where devlopmental affairs are undertaken by hill councils having special powers with access to funds and power to utilize them.

#39Keeping in view the backwardness and underdevelopment of these areas, we have a comprehensive and exclusive programme for the socio-economic development and political empowerment of the people of Poonch and Rajouri, #39 she said.

#39For the implementation of these programmes, PDP requires absolute majority in the coming assembly elections, #39 she added.

The PDP had won 16 seats in the 2002 polls and later formed a coalition government with the Congress which had 20 seats in the 87-member assembly.

Mufti is the first leader of a major political party to campaign in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.

The seven phased voting in Jammu and Kashmir begins Nov 17 and ends Dec 24. Counting of votes will take place Dec 28.
