Comments: I have to admit that I don't understand this trade from the vantage point of the Sox unless it is mostly about dumping salary.
With respect to the two major leaguers in the deal, Swisher is clearly better than Betemit. While the former had the worst season of his four-year career in 2008, he was still more productive than the latter. Swisher ranked last in batting average among players with at least 502 plate appearances, yet walked 82 times and slugged 24 home runs. His decline in AVG is solely attributable to a career-low BABIP of .251, which looks like an aberration given the fact that his batted ball data were, more or less, in-line with his career marks. If anything, his better-than-ever line-drive rate (20.9%) should have produced a somewhat higher rather than lower BABIP and AVG.
Betemit drew six bases on balls while whiffing 56 times (or once every 3.5 trips to the plate) last year. Since joining the Yankees during the 2007 season, the utility infielder has drawn 12 walks against 89 strikeouts for a horrific BB/SO rate of .135, perhaps suggesting that he has been overmatched in the AL East.
Only a year separates the two switch hitters in age. While Betemit may be slightly more valuable as an infielder than Swisher is as a corner outfielder and first baseman, his size realistically limits him to third and first and his bat just doesn't play all that well at either position. As such, he is basically nothing more than a backup, a fungible spot on a big-league roster. Eligible for arbitration, Betemit will probably "earn" $1.5-2.0M this season.
Swisher has three years remaining on a five-year, $26.75 million contract. He will make $5.3M in 2009, $6.75M in 2010, and $9M in 2011. His deal also includes a $10.25 million club option for 2012, with a $1 million buyout. At an average of $7.35M per season, Swisher is reasonably priced and a bargain if he can return to his 2006-2007 production.

By his standards, Derek Jeter got off to a slow start. Through May 18, Jeter had been to the 167, and while he was hitting .314, his OBP was just .349 and he was slugging just .429. With just 11 extra-base hits to his name, Jeter was not having the MVP season his teammates had predicted in Spring Training.
Then, on May 20, in a game in which a Jeter error led to six unearned runs, disaster in the form of a Daniel Cabrera fastball struck. Jeter had to leave the game in the third inning, and while X-Rays were negative, the next few weeks were not kind to the Yankee short stop. Between May 20 and June 14 — a span of 111 plate appearances — Jeter hit .198/.291/.292 with 14 runs scored, five extra-base hits and seven RBIs. It would be a brutal 25 games for the Yankee Captain.
After June 14, Jeter turned it all around. He hit .323/.390/.430 over his last 390 plate appearances, and while another HBP against the Orioles ended his season a few days early, he pulled down a .300/.363/.408 line on the year. But Jeter those numbers pale in comparison with his .316/.387/.458 mark. He didnt score 100 runs for the first time since his injury-shortened 2003 campaign, and he notched full-season career lows in doubles, home runs and hits.
Sabermetrically, Jeters numbers were down this year as well. His runs created per game dipped from 6.3 to 5.0. His VORP dropped from 53.3 to 37.5, and his win shares declined from 24 to 18. Overall, his subpar season didnt impact the team that much; his contributions declined by about two wins over the course of a full season. But if we assume that Jeter was indeed hurt by Cabreras fastball, his decision to play through the pain did not help the Yankees this year.
Of course, Jeters bad 25 games could have just been that. Perhaps, he just hit a slump, and the HBP was merely coincidental. And perhaps Jeters delince, at age 34, isnt to be unexpected. Hes on the downside of what has been a very productive career. Over the next few seasons, the Yanks will have to grapple with a lot of Derek Jeter-related questions. Hes not really fit for short stop, and his contract will soon end. The team is still relying on him to be that linchpin out of the two hole, and soon well see if that decision may not be the best for the future of the team.

Freedom Salute Honors 817th Engineer Company Soldiers

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Family, friends, employers and community members turned out
today to formally thank Soldiers from the 817th Engineer (Sapper) Company for
their service. The unit's 104 Soldiers returned in June from a yearlong
deployment to Iraq.

Gov. John Hoeven, Adjutant General Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk and
Congressman Earl Pomeroy thanked the Soldiers for their valiant service.

'To the vets that are here today and across our state and in our country - we
have a country because of you,' Hoeven said after encouraging a standing
ovation for the 817th Soldiers. '...There's nothing more important than the
way you ... 104 Solders of the 817th Engineer Company stepped up to serve.'

While in Iraq, the 817th Soldiers, who hail from 40 different cities,
conducted more than 575 patrols searching for explosives and other obstacles
that could prevent safe movement of military members and civilians. The
mission, known as Trailblazing, is one many had done previously when deployed
in 2004 with the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion. In all, the 817th cleared
more than 50,000 miles of roadway and removed 119 improvised explosive
devices, which provided for safer routes of travel.

'Accomplishing missions in Iraq is extremely difficult, if not impossible, if
supply routes are impeded by insurgents with roadside bombs,' Sprynczynatyk
said. 'I recently spent time in Iraq visiting with our Soldiers and Airmen
and the effort the North Dakota National Guard has done and is doing was
noted everywhere I traveled. The 817th Soldiers cleared the way for thousands
of Soldiers and Marines in Iraq, helping to ensure their safety, as well as
keeping roads open for transportation of needed supplies, such as food, water
and ammunition. The 817th thwarted insurgents' efforts, which went a long way
in increasing the safety in Iraq for both military forces and civilians.'

The unit's success is partially evident in the awards that have been bestowed
upon the 817th Soldiers. Fifteen earned Bronze Star medals, four were
recognized with Meritorious Service Medals and 90 received Army Commendation
medals. In all, 66 percent of the company is authorized to wear the Combat
Action Badge, with 29 having received one during this deployment and 40
previously. Sixty-seven Soldiers of the 817th have deployed at least once
before.

An additional medal was presented today, when Hoeven and Sprynczynatyk pinned
Sgt. Justin D. Fisher with a Purple Heart medal. It acknowledges that Fisher
was wounded in action toward the end of the 817th Company's deployment. It
was the only injury during the yearlong mission.

'We have asked a lot of these Soldiers,' Sprynczynatyk said. 'All have served
a year on active duty, many longer. They have left their families and
friends, missing birthdays and anniversaries. But all have stepped up as
volunteer citizen-Soldiers and served their nation proudly and capably. Their
families, too, have served, and their strength contributed greatly to the
success of this mission.'

Capt. Craig Hillig, of West Fargo, N.D., commanded the company and 1st Sgt.
Dave Huber of Lemmon, S.D., served as the senior enlisted Soldier.

The Freedom Salute campaign, begun in 2003, is one of the largest Army
National Guard recognition endeavors in history. It is designed to publicly
acknowledge Army Guard Soldiers and those who supported them during the
President's call to duty for Operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom and
Iraqi Freedom.

mobilized more than 2,700 Soldiers and nearly 1,600 Airmen in support of the
Global War on Terrorism. Currently, more than 200 Soldiers and Airmen from
the North Dakota National Guard remain on duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and other
locations throughout Southwest Asia. More than 4,300 National Guardsmen
remain in North Dakota and are available to provide support for state and
national emergencies and homeland defense.

For better or worse, the Yankees are bound to kick the tires on Manuel Aristides Ramirez this off-season. After all, its not every day that a first-ballot Hall of Famer who just so happens to be one of the greatest hitters of his generation becomes a free agent. The Yanks know they need offense, and no one player on the market could better supply them with that than Manny.
But at the same time, the Yankees dont quite need another long-term contract backloaded to provide some 40+ DH-type with a $20 million payout. The Yankees, in other words, will be in on Manny only if the years are right. The years might very well be wrong.
According to Tracy Ringolsby, Manny wants at least five years and $85 million. Earlier this year, as MLB Trade Rumors reminds us, Peter Gammons believed that a four-year, $100-million deal would land Manny. So it seems that Manny is looking for four or five years and between $17-$25 million a year. Thats not an unrealistic assumption for Boras.
Of course, for Mannys suitors it is. The Dodgers seem to be pricing themselves out of the race, but that could be just be a marketing ploy. They want Manny; Manny likes L.A. Their demands just need to match, and by negotiating now through and columnists, things might be easier during face-to-face meetings next month.
The real problem with Mannys potentially signing a long-term deal with the Dodgers though is the duration. Manny is 36 right now and funnily enough, is not getting any younger. Hes never been a great defender, and hes only getting worse. He can still hit though and belongs on an AL team.
The Dodgers, Yankees and Mets figure to be in on the bidding. After their amazing offensive showing against the Red Sox this week, the Angels should consider Mannys services as well. Perhaps hed fit on the White Sox too. But at these prices and at these years, not too many teams are going to call upon Manny as appealing as his numbers are.

TXU Energy sucks so bad. So bad. Would you believe that they STILL haven't fixed that problem? I have called them every other day for weeks and all they tell me is that they are still investigating. WTF is there to investigate? I've been inadvertently switched, someone screwed up and all I wanted them to do was put the service BACK in my name like it was before someone screwed up and put it in some anonymous 3rd persons name. I completely lost my shit on the TXU Supervisor this morning when he told me it would take as long as it takes and they have NO CLUE how long it may be, but when they DO figure it out they intend to bill me back till August 28 when they originally fucked up and transferred my service AND that I'll have to pay another deposit. So, I called Reliant Energy to see if they wanted me as a customer. I'm going to assume that answer is NO based on the $300 deposit they wanted me to pay. So then I called Direct Energy who was more than happy to provide me electric service with no deposit required whatsoever starting on October 1. So then I got to call TXU back and tell them to shove the "investigation" up their ass because I no longer wish to bother with them at all. That was the ONLY pleasure I have had this morning, besides the pleasure I got from eating my delicious #13 breakfast platter from Whataburger.

I didn't realize till last night that next month is my 1-year anniversary of working at IHOP (this time). One more year to go and then that income will count with my income from this job here when I apply for a home loan.

I have a little news from Marie. She's working 2 jobs right now, so she doesn't call as much, just a few times a day but she said last night that she's not far from getting her own apartment out there. She wants to move because the friend who talked her into the green card/marriage thing is who she is living with now. The girl, her husband, her 3 kids and the future green card recipient (now to be known as FGR) all in a 3-bedroom apartment. Well, Marie found out the girl is planning on taking her section 8 money and moving out, leaving Marie there with the FGR and the girls husband who she wants to leave and her 2 of her 3 kids. Yeah. I'll hang on while you go read that again if you need me too, I know it's confusing as hell. ANYWAY, Marie is skipping out before she gets skipped out on. Oh! And Marie told me she doesn't want to go through with the arrangement but she's not saying so until she moves out since she's kinda got herself stuck now. I have successfully scared the bejezus out of her by repeatedly reminding her it is a Federal Offence and how badly her life would be screwed up.

I just got off the phone with a customer service representative from mlb.com who probably hates his job, and his life, right now. A friend texted me this morning to remind me that there are TWENTY Major League Baseball games today, because of a number of double-headers (including my Royals). Ive written here before about how much I despise the sites blackout policy, but I went against my better judgment today and bought a one-day subscription. I mean, twenty baseball games on the computer, with college football all day on the TVthat sounds like heaven to me.
I was pretty mad when I wrote the first post. But that was when I didnt get to watch games as part of a free trial. Today, I paid to watch games that are not being televised. And Ive never been angry enough to actually swear at the customer service rep; usually I think Im mad, but by the time I get through to a person Ive cooled down and I cant bring myself to take out my ire on a person.
So heres the situation today: Its Saturday, so college football is king on TV. None of the 20 MLB games are on TV because of all the football. I guess thats fine, but Id really like to watch some baseball. HOWEVER, pretty much all the baseball games this afternoon are blacked out because the TV networks have the rights to televise them. But, you all are a smart bunch; I think you have already picked up on the fact that no TV networks are exercising their rights to broadcast baseball. Its a football day.
So what the hell was the point of me paying anything to watch games that arent on?? I tried logic with this rep. I didnt just ask what the blackout policy was; I already knew of their money-grubbing ways (born, no doubt, from being tucked so far in bed with TV networks that neither will ever come out from other the covers). I just wanted to know WHY.
Me: Yes, I understand that the TV networks have the rights to broadcast baseball games today. But none of them are exercising that right!
Rep: Yes.
Me: Sothey get money from their advertisers for having those exclusive rights while they also make bank by showing football games instead. And you get money from mlb.tv subscribers, whether or not they can watch the games. Is there any way for the customers to win here?
Rep:
Me: What the [beefy] is the point? Why did I buy a subscription for 20 [beefy] games I cant even watch?
Rep: The policy says that well you can listen to the games that are blacked out. There is no blackout policy for audio feeds.
Me: I already have an audio subscription. I dont want to listen*; I WANT TO [beefy] WATCH.

Me: So its either the TV networks fault or its MINE? And you are blameless. Really? Do you know ANYTHING about dealing with customers? I want my [beefy] money back.
Rep: I cant do that, because you didnt check the blackout policy.
Me: [beefy] [beefy] [beefy] [beefy]?!?!? Youre not helpful at all. Your greed-driven industry makes me want to [beefy] some [beefy] up. Have a nice [beefy] day.

*I already have an audio account anyway. If I just wanted to listen, I would have done it with that account.
At one point I mentioned that someone I know got a blackout-free account because he was using his considerable media exposure to talk about what crap the blackout policy is. When I brought this up, the rep put me on hold (for the first and only time in the call, oddly enough), but then came back and denied to within an inch of his life that such an account can exist. (But I just confirmed it with the guy I know who has it - it definitely exists.)

I dont know why we bought it we had a perfectly fine stadium filled with nostalgia, American Lore, and guy wrenching sentiment that is already in the south Bronx not revitalizing the neighborhood. But thats just the way we tax payers roll. Were rich, extravagant and love to help those less fortunate than us like the Steinbrenners and the NY Yankees organization. It is apparent that the Yankees need a stadium with fewer seats that cost more money to reserve for a game.

Meanwhile across the river in East Rutherford, NJ the NY Football Giants played their second home game to an average Cincinnati Bengals team. The Giants almost lost the game. Why? First off, you have to pay a few thousand dollars just for the right to buy season tickets. Then tickets are like $100 +/ticket, add on to that a pricey (somewhere around $20-35) for a parking pass per game. Who the hell can afford to go to a game? Plenty of upper middle class and rich people. Now, I dont have a problem with the upper middle class and rich on an individual basis. Im not a bigot. Rich people can be just as big of dicks as poor people. However, its a known fact that rich people dont yell in large groups. They only yell in board meetings and at their administrative assistants. Rich people arent going to make fools of themselves and be undignified in public they have too much to lose. Where as poor people are poor and all they have to loose is their debt.

Imagine the CEO of some corporation seen on national TV by some of his employees watching at home or at bar (far from ear shot of the visiting team) without his shirt on screaming his head off. Do you think that CEO is going to be respected by his underlings the next day? Mass financial chaos. Or what if a congressman was seen in body paint? People would lose total faith in the democratic process.

                Staged by the Lachute Road Runners this annual race is the fund raising event to support the college fund created in the name of local runner and Fort Ticonderoga Fife Drum Corp member, Duane Crammond, who died tragically in a car accident at the age of 24.
                Heidi Karkoski, Foot Race Committee spokesperson, says there is one aspect to the 5 k (3.1 mile) race that makes this particular footrace a runners dream, “The race is a true cross country race, participants are not running on pavement. It is often hard to find races where at least part of the course isn’t paved.”
                The race begins at 10am with the firing of a cannon and concludes inside historic Fort Ticonderoga as the Fort’s Fife Drum Corp hail the participants as they climb up the hill towards the finish line. Ms. Karkoski comments, “This is an inspirational one-tenth of a mile. Runners are tired and working hard towards the finish line and then you hear the Fife Drum Corp and the adrenaline kicks back in. I have received numerous comments on how much the runners love that aspect of this race.”
                Race officials are expecting this years race to top 150 participants as over 40 members of the running team from RPI, Duane Crammond’s alma mater, are taking part in the race to support their fallen alumnist and the scholarship in his name. Ms. Karkoski adds, “The success of the scholarship fund is directly tied to this race. Our goal is to increase the number of runners each year, potentially allowing us to increase the parameters of the scholarship fund.”
                For a second year the team challenge will be part of the race. Three runners sign up as a team and combine their individual scores to gain an overall team score. There is no additional fee to sign up as a team.
Pre-registration for the race is $15, $17 on race day. Race officials will be handing out T-shirts to the first 150 registered participants. The race is open to people of all ages with prizes going out to the overall male and female runners in addition to the top 3 runners in each adult 10 year age group. Prizes will also be awarded for children ages 15 – 19 and 14 and under.
Each race participant gains free admission to Fort Ticonderoga and The Kings Garden plus 2 free spectator passes good for race day.  After the race participants and their companions might check out the new Face Of War exhibit in the new Mars Education Center open now. 
The Face of War, Tragedy and Triumph at Ticonderoga, 1758-1759 exhibit delves into the three very different views of history from French, Indian, and British perspectives. It features a collection of original texts written by soldiers fighting on the front lines, communications between commanders, and illustrations created by the natives to narrate what they saw, felt, and experienced. The exhibit also features four life size figures created by Gerry Embleton, artist, illustrator, and researcher of historical costume.
