I went to the UCLA football game Saturday afternoon. One couple in our group brought their young boy, probably two or three-years-old. As we tailgated post-game, the boy ran all over the place. He tried to play with some other young kids who chased after a football or he played with his dad, running after his own ball and hiking it to his mom. One time, he ran toward our group and started to pick up speed. All of a sudden, he face planted. He got to his knees, giggled and said, “I fell.” Then he got up and started running again. He did not slow down. He was not embarrassed by his mistake. He did not think twice about running again. He laughed at his mistake and continued moving.

Author Timothy Gallwey argues that this is the natural learning process. Falling is a part of the learning process and it is not good or bad. The natural learning process removes the evaluative aspect of learning. In The Inner Game of Tennis, Gallwey argues that the natural way of learning is best for mastering sports skills. Instead, if our tailgate party had been a typical practice, a coach would have stopped the child after he fell and described the proper running technique. He needed to use his arms more as he had no arm drive and his front side mechanics were poor. After hearing all these instructions, the child’s mind would concentrate on the instructions, rather than the action. Rather than allowing the body to work without interference from the mind, the child would try to control his actions and do as the coach said to prevent another fall, ultimately inhibiting his performance.

In The Art of Possibility, Benjamin Zander writes about one of his orchestra rehearsals. Someone made a mistake and he stopped and said, “How fascinating!” There was no judgment or negative reaction. How many people use this type of reaction when they make a mistake? When we slice a drive off the tee, do we curse the shot that may lead to a bogey or acknowledge the possibility to make a great shot to save par?

In competitive youth athletics, coaches concentrate on mistakes. Coaches view their job as fixing mistakes so each player and the team improve (well, some just view their job as winning). In the process, we lose the natural learning process. We learn that mistakes are bad, and we judge ourselves harshly when we make a mistake. Rather than giggling and returning to the action or saying, “How fascinating!” before moving on, our shoulders slump, our eyes fall and our minds concentrate on the mistake. Rather than stay in the moment, our minds focus on the mistake, which hinders our next opportunity. If we step to the ball for our second shot after a big slice off the tee and concentrate on the result of our first shot rather than stay in the moment for the second shot, we are more likely to hit a poor second shot. Rather than see the possibility to make a great second shot, we allow one error to imprint itself in our mind and negatively affect our performance.

Adults need to un-learn their judgment-based behavior to unlock their best performances and enjoy their activities. However, kids possess this natural learning skill. With kids, we must nurture this skill, rather than forcing adult judgments on young kids. Kids take their cues from adults, and experts suggest as much as 90% of communication is non-verbal. When your boy strikes out and looks to the stands and your head slumps, he senses your disappointment, even if you quickly perk up and congratulate him on his effort. He learns that swinging and missing leads to disappointment. Maybe this teaches him not to swing, especially if he coaxes a walk in his next at-bat and sees you cheering him on his way to first. Rather than concentrate on learning to swing, his focus changes to getting on-base, which pleases his coach. However, when is he supposed to learn to hit live pitching? If he never takes a chance, how is he supposed to learn? Because he judges a swing and a miss negatively, he avoids the result by not trying. Rather than giggling at a swinging strike and swinging again, he falls and does not get up.

During the learning process of a skill, players must embrace and learn from mistakes (“How fascinating!”), rather than worry or criticize mistakes. Celebrate a swinging strike for the effort, rather than criticize the child for missing the ball. When a child swings and misses, he views it as part of the process. However, after being socialized into competitive athletics, he learns it is a mistake to avoid. He learns to concentrate on the ball. However, the irony of concentration is that if you actively try to concentrate, you are not concentrating. When a player concentrates, his mind is one with his body; many people describe this as being “unconscious” or “in the flow.” You cannot force these feelings. You cannot be actively unconscious.

If coaches and parents concentrate on positive and instructive comments, players see mistakes as a learning opportunity. If we believe youth sports are about learning and development, structuring comments as instructions, not criticism or insults should make sense because mistakes provide the best learning experiences. Unfortunately, our actions and our words do not align, as we say youth sports are about learning until we are in the middle of a tight contest, and then the parent’s and coach’s actions show that winning is more important than learning. To have the most impact, our actions and philosophy must align in tight games, as well as practices, so we teach and train players about the sport and competitiveness, while allowing young players to maintain the childlike attitude toward mistakes with a giggle, an acknowledgement (“I fell”) and a return to the activity with blissful ignorance.

While I played in college, we had a stairway from our locker room to the gym floor. On the wall at the turn in the stairs there was a quote that said

Practice and Play with the Poise and Intensity of a National Championship Team


Playing for entire college career and seeing that quote every day you would think that it would have some meaning to us as players. I dont know if my teammates, the players before or after I played thought about the quote very often. Like most things that you see over and over you take for granted. The college coach I played for was one of the most respected coaches in the profession, Don Meyer, and he is still coaching at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.

As a kid you do not take full advantage of the things that are available and definitely most kids today just like when we were kids do not understand to full blessings of life. We can all fall into the trap of taking things for granted like solid relationships, a caring mate, a friend you can share anything with and being able to be healthy enough just to walk and run around.

I put the sign up in our stairway here at Belhaven College just as we had while in college. What does that mean, Practice and play with the poise and intensity of a national championship team? Maybe I could word it different, but in respect for my coach I made the sign say exactly what he put on that wall over 25 years ago.

Poise
To practice and play with poise and intensity. Poise means self-assurance, composure, self-control, dignity. I know our coach was more concerned with us as people than he was at winning a national championship team. He was not a win at all costs coach and he didnt try to cut corners. He wanted your best. Whatever you could give thats what he wanted. Was he hard to play for? Did he push us hard? Did he yell? Yes, yes, and yes. Not a player that played for him would disagree, but probably those of us that made it through four years of playing for him would ever say he was unfair, that he cared only about himself, or that he only played favorites. That is tough to do in coaching, teaching, running a business, pastoring a church or anything else.

How do you push, yell, and be hard to play for but you are fair, care about others more than yourself, or play favorites? I do not know how he did it because I struggle as a husband, parent, and coach to do the things Coach did and coach the way he coached. Our styles are different and our personalities are not the same, but he taught me a lot about myself.

Why am I sharing something with you that happened 25 years ago? I say these things to let you know I was sharing with someone recently about Coach Meyer and how he was hard to play for at times, but always fair. Most people ask what it was like to play for Coach Meyer because he is so well known around the country as a fantastic coach. I usually answer, It was a great experience To be honest sometimes I leave out the word and just say It was an experience, but one of the best of my life.

It was an experience that I am not sure I have ever fully appreciated or will ever fully appreciate. But here is the thing I have just recently realized: He never made things personal. We were not or any other downgrading you can think of to call someone. He was on us hard and never let up, but I look back and see that you never left practice or a game defeated or dejected. You might not have like the outcome, but he had the ability even when he chewed you out that you the entire time he was correct and you deserved whatever he was going to dish out.

All of his former players laugh now about being singled out and may have caught the brunt of his displeasure a time or two. The funnier thing is that we usually deserved everything he dished out to us and we look back and realize that time he really got us was well deserved.

I know this is a real area that I am trying to correct in not making other fell attacked personally. Whether it is my wife, my own kids, or anyone associated with our basketball program. I want to be able to push and motivate others to give their best, but not at the expense of tearing them down. Hopefully I someday turn the corner and not get disgusted when others let me down or dont give their best. I can still find ways to communicate without making others fell lower and making myself look better. Even though he was animated on the sidelines and any one that played for him can give you a great story about being chewed out by him about something he had that POISE. He had poise to know when to push and when to let up. He had the poise to teach and emphasize with us what it meant to have class and carry ourselves a certain way. He made you want to be better. Even today he instilled in me the desire to keep trying to improve to not be satisfied and to have the poise and belief that I could get better.

Intensity

Intensity means strength, concentration, passion and power. Coach had unbelievable intensity when it came to working. He was relentless. We knew he would always be prepared and if a game came down to coaching we would have a great chance of winning because Coach was going to put us in position to win. Even if we lost on the scoreboard Coach would have us leave thinking we were winners because he stressed being intense about how you played. I have tried to bring those positive aspects of intensity in how I am as a mate, a father and coach.

It is amazing how important intensity is to having success. Intensity is the ability to do what you are supposed to do even when you dont want to do whatever that task may be. He taught me how important it was to have that intensity and desire.

As I played my four years in college I looked at the sign too many times to count and walked by it many time without even thinking about the sign. I was one of the fortunate ones that came through the program and my last year we did win the National Championship. It was not with talent, but with Poise and Intensity and also practicing and playing like that all the time. The more interesting thing is that although we had a good team we were not the most talented team coach ever had, nor the most intense, nor the most poised, nor the most athletic. It is just for that season it all came together. The players before us that built the program and the ones that came after to continue the tradition were just as important as our team was in winning the National Championship.

What I learned most was that it took a group of individuals committed to a goal, determined to follow leadership, and a willingness to put aside individual attention.
To do the saying Practice and play with poise and intensity of a National Championship team means to give to something bigger than yourself.

Halftime

I feel as if I am the halftime of my career (being 45 years old) and that makes me think I have come into the locker room of life. I have played the first half and made many mistakes, but fortunately, I still am in the game. Now I get ready to come out of the locker room for the second half of life hopefully.

For me I want to win that National Championship and get the glory of being perceived as a successful coach. I want to be able to say I played on a National Championship team and coached a National Championship team. That goal still sits in the back of my mind. More important now is how I coach the young men I encounter the remainder of my career. I have made more mistakes than most during the first half of my career, have regretted decisions, was too hard on certain players, too distant with some players, allowed outside influences distract me from the goal of developing my team and young men.

My vision now is to make the next half count. To adjust the game plan of my career a little bit I am saying I will make decisions and decide:
1. To be more passionate about developing the young men in the program
2. To make each guy feel important
3. To be more passionate about sharing Gods love with each member of our program
4. To help each player find out what his gift is in life and to help him pursue his dream.
5. To be a coach that sees development takes time and is not always determined by the won-loss record
6. To relax and let God be God and for me to serve Him

I want to be where God is working and He is working here in our program. It is not always visible, but it is happening and I want to help people see the vision and see what can be done when a group of coaches and players all strive to play for the same goal. That goal is to glorify God in what we do and in how we play. I am thankful for each day I have to be a coach, to be someone that is the trenches in helping young men find their Spiritual meaning and what God has for their life, to help them grow academically so they can be successful in what their chosen field or profession may be and to challenge them athletically. It is not easy and it takes a lot of determination, but I know there is a pay off down the road. I tell people the great thing about my job is that I have no idea what I am doing. I mean that I have no idea what of these young men that come through our program are going to do in life one day. I have no idea how they are going to turn out during their time with us and once they leave. I pray we invest in their lives enough and pour ourselves into them that they benefit a great deal by being part of our program. Even with the uncertainty, I am sure excited about seeing what will happen with them one day and what they will become. There is great joy in this journey.

The bias question continues to look dismal for any trust in the media:
Men are far more suspicious of bias by debate moderators than women. Male voters by a 65 to 22 margin say the moderators are biased. Women agree on the bias but by just 48 to 25.
Seventy-two percent (72) of Republicans and 57 of unaffiliated voters think the moderators are biased. But even 41 of Democrats agree, compared to 31 who say they are generally unbiased.

SO My observation that the moderation was not only bad moderation, but biased appears to be the norm.
I think perhaps MR Lehrers recent illness and heart problems may have changed his normally Genial demeanor, perhaps he feels more is a stake and he has more leeway due to people making allowances after his health problems.
A presidential debate is not a time to experience new and interesting ways of Presenting the candidates, nor to attempt to bully the candidates into a form which they did not expect.( or agree to). I went on a picnic to Biwako valley with my friends.


It was very cool and the view from the top of the mountain was sooooo beautiful!!


We had lunch which I cooked in early morning there. We could enjoy seeing the horrible scene that
old men and women flying from the hill (they were skydiving) with having lunch.


After that, we played badminton and frisby and so on. I enjoyed a lot and also was tired a lot.


But the most memorable thing for me the gondola cable!! It raised us too high place from the sea level ground and shaked and swinged and rattled and terrified me!!!

The NBA season (or shadows of it) is nearly upon us. In anticipation of the upcoming season, the entire TCG staff has travelled to lovely Boise, Idaho to bring you nonstop Jazz Training Camp coverage. While we're here we'll also fill you on in the fun things to do in the Boise area.

Today, before camp began, I dropped the twins off at Boiseko Ikastola, a preschool that teaches kids the invaluable Basque language. Did you know that it was the first Basque preschool outside of the Basque country? Pupils that prove to be good learners and loyal, robotic followers of authority advance to upper-level classes such as Basque poetry, advanced Euskadi, and secrets of successful bomb campaigns.

But I digress. Boise is famous for more than Basque preschools and milk shakes made out of potatoes: it is also famous for hosting the Jazz at the Taco Bell Arena for one week in October.

The worst culprits on the network are the crew from NFL countdown which consists of Chris Berman, (uncle) Tom Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, and Mike Ditka. These guys get on the air and LOVE taking shots at Owens, Keyshawn and Tom in particular. Johnson has a real reason to hate T.O. because Owens put him in his place last year.
The Worldwide Leader In Sports needs T.O. to do ANYTHING that can be stretched out into a weeks worth of coverage. It really drives me up the wall when fans buy into the hype and fail to see how a sports network injects themselves into a situation for ratings.

Playing for entire college career and seeing that quote every day you would think that it would have some meaning to us as players. I dont know if my teammates, the players before or after I played thought about the quote very often. Like most things that you see over and over you take for granted. The college coach I played for was one of the most respected coaches in the profession, Don Meyer, and he is still coaching at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.

As a kid you do not take full advantage of the things that are available and definitely most kids today just like when we were kids do not understand to full blessings of life. We can all fall into the trap of taking things for granted like solid relationships, a caring mate, a friend you can share anything with and being able to be healthy enough just to walk and run around.

I put the sign up in our stairway here at Belhaven College just as we had while in college. What does that mean, Practice and play with the poise and intensity of a national championship team? Maybe I could word it different, but in respect for my coach I made the sign say exactly what he put on that wall over 25 years ago.

Poise
To practice and play with poise and intensity. Poise means self-assurance, composure, self-control, dignity. I know our coach was more concerned with us as people than he was at winning a national championship team. He was not a win at all costs coach and he didnt try to cut corners. He wanted your best. Whatever you could give thats what he wanted. Was he hard to play for? Did he push us hard? Did he yell? Yes, yes, and yes. Not a player that played for him would disagree, but probably those of us that made it through four years of playing for him would ever say he was unfair, that he cared only about himself, or that he only played favorites. That is tough to do in coaching, teaching, running a business, pastoring a church or anything else.

How do you push, yell, and be hard to play for but you are fair, care about others more than yourself, or play favorites? I do not know how he did it because I struggle as a husband, parent, and coach to do the things Coach did and coach the way he coached. Our styles are different and our personalities are not the same, but he taught me a lot about myself.

Why am I sharing something with you that happened 25 years ago? I say these things to let you know I was sharing with someone recently about Coach Meyer and how he was hard to play for at times, but always fair. Most people ask what it was like to play for Coach Meyer because he is so well known around the country as a fantastic coach. I usually answer, It was a great experience To be honest sometimes I leave out the word and just say It was an experience, but one of the best of my life.

It was an experience that I am not sure I have ever fully appreciated or will ever fully appreciate. But here is the thing I have just recently realized: He never made things personal. We were not or any other downgrading you can think of to call someone. He was on us hard and never let up, but I look back and see that you never left practice or a game defeated or dejected. You might not have like the outcome, but he had the ability even when he chewed you out that you the entire time he was correct and you deserved whatever he was going to dish out.

All of his former players laugh now about being singled out and may have caught the brunt of his displeasure a time or two. The funnier thing is that we usually deserved everything he dished out to us and we look back and realize that time he really got us was well deserved.

I know this is a real area that I am trying to correct in not making other fell attacked personally. Whether it is my wife, my own kids, or anyone associated with our basketball program. I want to be able to push and motivate others to give their best, but not at the expense of tearing them down. Hopefully I someday turn the corner and not get disgusted when others let me down or dont give their best. I can still find ways to communicate without making others fell lower and making myself look better. Even though he was animated on the sidelines and any one that played for him can give you a great story about being chewed out by him about something he had that POISE. He had poise to know when to push and when to let up. He had the poise to teach and emphasize with us what it meant to have class and carry ourselves a certain way. He made you want to be better. Even today he instilled in me the desire to keep trying to improve to not be satisfied and to have the poise and belief that I could get better.

Intensity

Intensity means strength, concentration, passion and power. Coach had unbelievable intensity when it came to working. He was relentless. We knew he would always be prepared and if a game came down to coaching we would have a great chance of winning because Coach was going to put us in position to win. Even if we lost on the scoreboard Coach would have us leave thinking we were winners because he stressed being intense about how you played. I have tried to bring those positive aspects of intensity in how I am as a mate, a father and coach.

It is amazing how important intensity is to having success. Intensity is the ability to do what you are supposed to do even when you dont want to do whatever that task may be. He taught me how important it was to have that intensity and desire.

As I played my four years in college I looked at the sign too many times to count and walked by it many time without even thinking about the sign. I was one of the fortunate ones that came through the program and my last year we did win the National Championship. It was not with talent, but with Poise and Intensity and also practicing and playing like that all the time. The more interesting thing is that although we had a good team we were not the most talented team coach ever had, nor the most intense, nor the most poised, nor the most athletic. It is just for that season it all came together. The players before us that built the program and the ones that came after to continue the tradition were just as important as our team was in winning the National Championship.

What I learned most was that it took a group of individuals committed to a goal, determined to follow leadership, and a willingness to put aside individual attention.
To do the saying Practice and play with poise and intensity of a National Championship team means to give to something bigger than yourself.

Halftime

I feel as if I am the halftime of my career (being 45 years old) and that makes me think I have come into the locker room of life. I have played the first half and made many mistakes, but fortunately, I still am in the game. Now I get ready to come out of the locker room for the second half of life hopefully.

For me I want to win that National Championship and get the glory of being perceived as a successful coach. I want to be able to say I played on a National Championship team and coached a National Championship team. That goal still sits in the back of my mind. More important now is how I coach the young men I encounter the remainder of my career. I have made more mistakes than most during the first half of my career, have regretted decisions, was too hard on certain players, too distant with some players, allowed outside influences distract me from the goal of developing my team and young men.

My vision now is to make the next half count. To adjust the game plan of my career a little bit I am saying I will make decisions and decide:
1. To be more passionate about developing the young men in the program
2. To make each guy feel important
3. To be more passionate about sharing Gods love with each member of our program
4. To help each player find out what his gift is in life and to help him pursue his dream.
5. To be a coach that sees development takes time and is not always determined by the won-loss record
6. To relax and let God be God and for me to serve Him

I want to be where God is working and He is working here in our program. It is not always visible, but it is happening and I want to help people see the vision and see what can be done when a group of coaches and players all strive to play for the same goal. That goal is to glorify God in what we do and in how we play. I am thankful for each day I have to be a coach, to be someone that is the trenches in helping young men find their Spiritual meaning and what God has for their life, to help them grow academically so they can be successful in what their chosen field or profession may be and to challenge them athletically. It is not easy and it takes a lot of determination, but I know there is a pay off down the road. I tell people the great thing about my job is that I have no idea what I am doing. I mean that I have no idea what of these young men that come through our program are going to do in life one day. I have no idea how they are going to turn out during their time with us and once they leave. I pray we invest in their lives enough and pour ourselves into them that they benefit a great deal by being part of our program. Even with the uncertainty, I am sure excited about seeing what will happen with them one day and what they will become. There is great joy in this journey.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) today announced the loan of a high-tech wind-measuring instrument called an anemometer to the Portland Public Schools for installation at East End Community School on Munjoy Hill.
The device will allow detailed measurement of wind direction and velocity in the area, with an eye toward eventual installation of an electricity-generating wind turbine.
“This is an exciting first step in our exploration of wind energy for our schools,” said Portland Superintendent Jeanne Whynot-Vickers. “It’s a rich learning opportunity for our students and it will build on our efforts to be a leader in energy conservation.”
Under the new program, the MPUC will loan two anemometers – one to the Portland Public Schools and one to the Auburn Water District - as well as the 100-foot towers which will raise them into the wind streams.  Data gathering and analysis will be provided by engineering students at the University of Maine in Orono.
“Valid scientific data about the most effective sites for small wind turbines will be crucial to establishing them as a viable energy source,” said Maine PUC Chairman Sharon M. Reishus. “As high energy prices and climate change concerns bring small wind into the public imagination, the Portland Schools and Auburn Water District are leading the way to wind that works for Maine.”
Portland school officials say the project will become a valuable educational tool in the “Expeditionary” learning model at the East End Community School.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supplied the anemometers as part of a national program to help communities make accurate assessments of wind energy potential.
“The Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America program supports this effort because of Maine’s significant potential to contribute to the national goal of using wind for 20 percent of our energy supply by 2030,” said Dwight Bailey, project manager for the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory.  “We also look forward to working with Maine on statewide outreach and education that will help grow the local wind industry.

I sent an inquiry to Vicki Hamilton, CMS Athletic Director and a very talented one at that. I wanted to find out if CMS thought this was a problem or if anything was being done and why things were so different between CMS and Union County School. Vickis reply included some of the CMS rules and regulations as well as the comment that there is no plan at this time to budget to expand middle school athletics to create a 7th grade and separate 8th grade team in 13 sports offerings.
Probably not what a lot of current Middle School parents would like to hear. Especially the ones that dealt with very upset children this week that were cut from the football team.
Since I mentioned Union County, I believe its very important to commend them on the approach they have taken to middle school athletics. Every sport except for basketball and basketball cheerleading is operated by very strong booster clubs. These booster clubs work hard to provide more opportunities for their students. For instance, Weddington Middle School has a 6th, 7th and 8th grade Football Team. They begin practice on August 1 versus September 3rd for CMS. They play big games on Saturday afternoons and never have to worry about darkness cutting their games in half like CMS Middle Schools run into for the last two games of the season. The Union County Schools also have a playoff system and treat the season as something special. Kudos to the Weddington and Marvin Ridge Booster Clubs.
Its also important to point out that budget should not be something that prevents the schools from providing more opportunities. The kids already pay a large activity fee to participate and I know the power of parents in South Charlotte. If they need to raise money to make something happen they will, at no extra cost to the school system. If the wonderful folks out at Weddington and Marvin Ridge can make this happen, why cant the families of South Charlotte Middle Schools?
Maybe it is time for some outside the box thinking. I would like to see CMS follow the Union County method of letting the Middle School Athletic Programs be run by Booster Clubs. It would be one less thing for CMS to worry about and they can take the money they spend on the programs and use if for something else, maybe even start to build another much needed middle school in South Charlotte.
We are leaving too many kids on the sidelines by sending them to middle schools with 1800 kids and 140 kids trying to earn one of 45 positions on a football team. If CMS cant address the problem, then maybe its time for someone else to come in with a plan that will create competitive opportunities for these student-athletes. Its important to note that I dont intend for this column to be against CMS as I am a proud CMS Parent and Supporter, but the size of the school district and overcrowding of the schools has created some problems and this is one that probably doesnt get a lot of attention downtown at the main office. Thats understandable with all the eligibility problems and paperwork they have faced the last year. Vicki and her staff are good people, they work a ton of hours each week to stay on top of all the high school and middle school programs and maybe deep down they realize the problem, but know the time and resources arent there to fix it.
It kind of scares me to know exactly how talented my five year old will have to be when he gets to middle school. By then, there will probably be 2500 kids at his school, with 40 trailers parked around the football field like a campground with 250 kids trying to earn a spot on the football team.
