And yet retailers havent made these cases because they always return to their tactic of choice: brute force.

Some departments are easy to spot, others are obscured. How about using digital signage and interactive video to help the customer find their way to desired productsand first of all, finding out where they are in the store to start. That brings up another idea; how about a lost parents or Dad finder, similar to what theme parks do. Somewhere to sign-in if you get separated from your shopping companions.
Secondly, customers shop Walmart to save money. How about the system facilitating comparison shopping? This would be not only the cost compared to Walmart competitors, but how about bringing in Consumer Reports to tell the customers about products that are really a great value, or the cost trending of items that are becoming more expensive or reducing in price.
Not everyone shopping the aisles in Walmart, or any store for that matter, has current information on fashion trends or any idea on what goes with what. In an effort to help all of America to become fashion savvy and look good, how about information coordination, and detailing in the apparel aisles. Maybe even introduce My Fashion Coordinator software to allow the consumer the chance to input ergonomic particulars about their bodies, and get helpful input on a desirable fashion direction.
And this goes with my final fact; it is difficult to get help anywhere in a Walmart. So introduce a virtual store concierge who greats you when you arrive, and with motion or heat sensors, guides your through the store. I know that this may be a bit like Minority Report, but if that system was developed to be customer-friendly and not creepy, it would be really cool.
Understand that none of these suggestions is better than a front door greeter, a personal shopping assistant, or KNOWLEDGEABLE help available when you need it. But if not, these would be the next best things.

1. For in-store digital media to succeed in Walmart or elsewhere, there has to be the realization that, no matter what anybody calls it, this isnt a television network. While content is king and the reason for someone to go beyond simply noticing and actually watching what is on a digital screen, the medium is not about stopping people for extended periods of time. The environment is retail and people in that environment are on the move. They can get pretty ticked off if someone else is taking up space and interfering with the traffic flow. Messages need to be communicated quickly and be targeted to a given stores consumers.
2. Digital images on a screen are ultimately unsatisfying even with amazing production values. Retailers need to be looking for ways to use the medium to connect consumers with the solutions available through the store or merchants website. Interactivity with video kiosks, especially those that tie to the back-end to recognize a consumer through a loyalty card, RFID key fob, smart phone, password, etc, will provide a level of personalization that will transition digital media from big screens blaring in a store to a tool that helps consumers get the most from their shopping experience.
3. Professionals in this space understand that digital media goes beyond a bank of screens in a consumer electronics department or a monitor offering food preparation tips in front of a fresh meat case. Stores need to start thinking in terms of other locations including store exteriors as a banner and brand-building medium, as well. Look at what Walgreens is doing in New Yorks Times Square as an extreme example of another means for retailers to generate revenue and promote products and services.
4. Theres no doubt that marketers are looking more than ever to communicate with consumers in stores. Ultimately, however, the dollars that are starting to move in-store for digital signage and other merchandising tools will go right back out if some, at least vaguely, reliable source of measurement is not in place. There are a lot of companies (brands, retailers and digital tech vendors) working in the digital media space today that are focused on that very issue. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
The new Walmart network may have sleeker flat screens and a more elaborate audience measurement mechanism than PRISM, but it has yet to deliver the kind of behavior-based metrics that (in my opinion) would put shopper media over the top.
Despite the glowing, rectangular screens, this is not TV. Shoppers are busy people focused on a task who want to get their stuff and go. Messages that are not relevant to their mission of the moment or located away from the product in question have very low value. And measuring opportunities to see a message is a poor proxy for tracking behavior that may be influenced by the message.
That said, I am an enthusiastic advocate of shopper media. The store environment offers an outstanding opportunity to reach and influence shoppers. But framing its value in the antique conception of 1950s television advertising is worse than quaintfrom the perspective of the brands themselves, its probably negligent.

1. For in-store digital media to succeed in Walmart or elsewhere, there has to be the realization that, no matter what anybody calls it, this isnt a television network. While content is king and the reason for someone to go beyond simply noticing and actually watching what is on a digital screen, the medium is not about stopping people for extended periods of time. The environment is retail and people in that environment are on the move. They can get pretty ticked off if someone else is taking up space and interfering with the traffic flow. Messages need to be communicated quickly and be targeted to a given stores consumers.
2. Digital images on a screen are ultimately unsatisfying even with amazing production values. Retailers need to be looking for ways to use the medium to connect consumers with the solutions available through the store or merchants website. Interactivity with video kiosks, especially those that tie to the back-end to recognize a consumer through a loyalty card, RFID key fob, smart phone, password, etc, will provide a level of personalization that will transition digital media from big screens blaring in a store to a tool that helps consumers get the most from their shopping experience.
3. Professionals in this space understand that digital media goes beyond a bank of screens in a consumer electronics department or a monitor offering food preparation tips in front of a fresh meat case. Stores need to start thinking in terms of other locations including store exteriors as a banner and brand-building medium, as well. Look at what Walgreens is doing in New Yorks Times Square as an extreme example of another means for retailers to generate revenue and promote products and services.
4. Theres no doubt that marketers are looking more than ever to communicate with consumers in stores. Ultimately, however, the dollars that are starting to move in-store for digital signage and other merchandising tools will go right back out if some, at least vaguely, reliable source of measurement is not in place. There are a lot of companies (brands, retailers and digital tech vendors) working in the digital media space today that are focused on that very issue. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
The new Walmart network may have sleeker flat screens and a more elaborate audience measurement mechanism than PRISM, but it has yet to deliver the kind of behavior-based metrics that (in my opinion) would put shopper media over the top.
Despite the glowing, rectangular screens, this is not TV. Shoppers are busy people focused on a task who want to get their stuff and go. Messages that are not relevant to their mission of the moment or located away from the product in question have very low value. And measuring opportunities to see a message is a poor proxy for tracking behavior that may be influenced by the message.
That said, I am an enthusiastic advocate of shopper media. The store environment offers an outstanding opportunity to reach and influence shoppers. But framing its value in the antique conception of 1950s television advertising is worse than quaintfrom the perspective of the brands themselves, its probably negligent.

Life for Jea Ambriz, had been a difficult one filled with strife and having to do without with so much. Now she worked on a dirty cheap colony trying to make a living. Glades Commissioner Storter's Gambling Views
MOORE HAVEN, FL. -- Glades County Commissioner Donna Storter Long has this week written a letter in respose to inquiries about bringing in additional Glades county money. Storter wrote to Eric Kopp of Independent News:
I received your message of yesterday and offer this response: About 10 days ago, John Austin Collier brought me the idea of countywide gambling as a viable revenue option for Glades County in reversing the negative impacts on the economy that is expected by the sale of US Sugar to South Florida Water Management District.
Since gambling is legal, regulated and already exists in Glades County at Brighton, the possibility of obtaining revenue from legalized gambling definitely warrants further discussion.
Governor Crist supports gambling in Florida, and though revenue to the state was down a few years ago, the temporary decline was because the lucrative expansions were under Indian control and not subject to state taxation.
Should we embark on this course, with careful planning and management of the initial revenues, Glades County can restore and recreate the amenities that will make our county the new family vacation destination of the freshwater frontier, with more attractions than just gambling establishments.
Produced without environmental pollution and with little demand on government services and infrastructure, the revenue can be used to enhance services and infrastructure while lowering ad valorem tax millage. That has been the consensus of the many constituents that have been approached by this idea.
I have conferred with Sen. Alexander�s staff and Rep. Grimsley�s staff and learned the procedure for offering this choice to the people of Glades County. It will take 600,000 signatures to get the initiative on the ballot for Florida voters statewide to decide if they want to amend our constitution to allow Glades County to conduct its own referendum to authorize gambling in Glades County.
That Glades County referendum would require affirmation by 60% of Glades County voters, the PEOPLE would decide if the option merits opportunity.
We have the climate. We have the geography. Maybe this can be a viable opportunity. It certainly should not be ignored, but carefully examined to determine all the positive and all the negative results we could anticipate from this proven moneymaker and give the people of Glades County the facts to make their own decision; is this the direction our County should take?
There is no panacea for the economic woes of Glades County, but, because this is one option that could bring a lot of revenue to Glades County, I feel we should at least explore it. Therefore, I will request that Governor Crist direct his resources to help us in this exploration.

So I never finished this little blog, did I?
Well, there was quite a bit to catch up on in those last two days across the sea.
So we woke up early on that Friday morning in Liverpool, caught a cab, and hopped a bus back to London. It was sad to leave Liverpool. Itapos;s such an interesting city with so much character. I feel so lucky to have visited, since many people donapos;t often make their way up to Northern England. Itapos;s such a beautiful place, and I hope to get back someday.
The bus ride was beyond funny. Em and I sat together and were probably the two loudest people on the bus. Thatapos;s okay though...what more can you expect from us?Although I was sad to leave Liverpool, arriving back in London brought a strange feeling--it felt like I was going home. I mean, I noticed familiar places and sites, and it filled me with sheer joy to see jolly olapos; London again. We arrived at the bus station, caught another cab, and we headed back to IES. Driving down Kingapos;s Road again was like a dream. I couldnapos;t believe how much I had missed it, and I was only gone for a week
Raz was happy to see us back at IES (Iapos;m sure), and we harassed him through the outside intercom, just like old times. We snuck Hannah in (hahah), got ready, and headed to the T right away. We had missed our lovely pub It was good to be back.
After sitting around for...hours...Hannah, Jason, Dave and I headed out for one last night on the town. We hit up Tesco for some Tube-ride Strongbow and headed out to Camden. After walking around for what seemed like days, we finally decided on a bar called Belushiapos;s (oh, how American). We had a pretty fun time for a bit, and after a long night we headed out. I fell asleep on the late night bus (again), and it finally dropped us at High Street Kensington. Being super tired (and finding out that the next bus might not be for a half hour), we caught a cab and called it a night. It was sad to say goodbye to Jazzhands (Jason, duh) and Hannah (she was leaving, too), but so it is.
I hit the hay and only got a few winks before waking up to catch a cab then the Tube for Heathrow. It was quite an adventure. My bags were lighter than before, yet still incredibly heavy. Urgh. And that Tube ride to Heathrow was soooo long. We finally made it, though, and it was grand.
However, I must note, that last Tube right was very, very sad, as well. It was the last time Iapos;d spend with my friends on the Tube, the last time Iapos;d travel through London for who knows how long...gosh, thinking about it now makes me incredibly sad, actually. But so it is.
We checked in and guess what...we met Roy from "the Office" It was quite exciting to meet him, as we are all office fans, so yay for that. So we moved on, went through security, and then hit up the Duty Free shop. Ohhhh goodness, that was an adventure. After buying a few things, we hit up Fridayapos;s for some nice Americana (it was the first American food we had had the whole time) and exercised our drinking rights one last time with some nice daquiris. Yum.
So we headed to our flight, hopped on, and settled in for the flight. This is where it gets interesting.
So about halfway through the flight, I start to feel a bit chilly. I figured it was the air vent from the seat in front of me, so I tried to bundle up and sleep, but it wouldnapos;t work. As the flight came to an end, I started to feel even worse. Slight stomachache, a bit woozy, more chills...something was up.
We got off the plane, and I knew something was wrong. I figured it was just some air nausea (although I never get sick on flights), but it felt like more than that. The farther I walked through the terminal, the worse it got. As I walked farther, I started to get these intense stomach cramps that felt like a dozen knives twisting and turning in my gut. In other words, it sucked hardcore.
So we get down to Customs, and everyone is far ahead of me. I make it through Immigration, hardly able to stand up, sweating a lot, and feeling like Iapos;m about to pass out. The guy at the desk looks at my Passport, then proceeds to have this brief exchange with me.
Guy: "So, how was your flight?"
Me (Obviously in pain): "Uh...good..."
Guy: "You feeling okay? Are you nauseous?"
Me (Rubbing face, nearly panting): "No...and yes...not so good."
Guy (Stamps my Passport): "Well, Welcome to the U.S."
Welcome home, indeed.
So right after I walk away from the desk, I see Jess waiting for me and looking super concerned. As I walk up, my gag reflex goes into overtime, and I nearly throw up right in the middle of Customs. She gets this super shocked look on her face (I donapos;t blame her), I throw my bags down, and say "Whereapos;s the bathroom?"
I speed walk there, the slight breeze from my brisk pace actually feeling nice, and, of course, the line is atrocious. I nearly pass out. When I made my way out, I couldnapos;t stand anymore. I hunkered down on a nearby bench and just start writhing. My friends, gosh, they must have been freaked, but they were angels to stay there with me. They fetched someone nearby and got a wheelchair for me. So I get on in and the guy speeds me over to the Public Health office, where they proceed to tell me that all they can do for me is give me a bed to lie down on and take my temperature. Nice.
So I continue to writhe, trying not to cry because (in my best "my mom is a nurse, let me try to reason like her" mindest) I knew that crying would cause post-nasal drip, thus going to my stomach and making it hurt more (Gosh, I should be a nurse), then thinking "What the hell, I feel like Iapos;m dying, and all I can do is find reasons NOT to cry?", so I then proceeded to bawl eyes out. It hurt more than I could describe, and it scared the hell out of me because I had NO idea what was going on.
The "nurse" finally asked me if I needed an ambulance. Knowing how expensive they are (despite health insurance, I canapos;t help it--my momapos;s a nurse, like I said, and Iapos;ve been raised not to make a big deal out of little health issues...but this was NO little health issue), I didnapos;t want to, but I finally gave in. It hurt too badly.
So finally the paramedics came, these cute, crazy, older former Chicago firemen, and they wheeled me out on the gurney. In my immense pain, I got some weird gratification about the whole thing. Iapos;d always wondered what it was like to be wheeled out on a gurney and taken in an ambulance. Just curious, I guess.
And then--BOOM Doors fly open and I look around me. AIRPLANES They had seriously pulled through the tarmac and were going to speed away with me in the back, amidst the planes and whatnot. Oh gosh, it felt like a movie. I felt so important (haha)
So they hook me up to the IV and put the mask on my face, and it was so surreal. We finally arrive, and they admit me to the ER...and not long after, the pain subsides. No kidding. That WOULD happen, right? As soon as I get to the place that can help me out, I feel better. Such is life, I guess.
I fall asleep for a bit, and then Jess arrives with her parents. Gosh, I felt so bad to put them through all of that, but they were dolls for putting up with me. After a short stint, they let me go, and we headed to Oapos;Hare again. Why? One of my bags was "lost," of course. Or, so we thought.
I slept through most of this next part on a bench in the airport, but we were under the impression that my bag was stuck in Customs (Jess had retrieved one of them, and it bypassed Customs by going with me in the ambulance...nice) because of the hullabaloo. The people at the airport were no help, and after a long time, we finally headed home, unsure of where my bag was.
It was such a weird night, and half of it was a blur. I couldnapos;t believe how my trip ended, but it didnapos;t spoil my trip at all. AT ALL. Nothing could ruin the time I had.
We woke up bright and early the next day after a wonderful nightapos;s sleep and headed back to Oapos;Hare for my flight to Cleveland. I waited around for a bit and got kind of sad. This was the last leg of my amazing trip. It was nearly over.
Although I love Ohio, flying back to it is never that exciting. I loved seeing my mom, but man...London? You canapos;t really beat it, you know? I just wanted to go back, right away.
We got word on my bag, though. Stuck in London. FIgures, right? Luckily it was returned a week later. Thank God, too. It had all my special souvenirs from the trip, including my Euro clothes. GAH
So, now as I reflect nearly a month and a half later, I want to cry.
I want to cry because I miss London so much. It became such a big part of me in such a short amount of time, and I love it SO much. I want to go back as soon as possible. I want to live there for a while. I just need to see it again.
I want to cry because I had the time of my life there, and I wish I could have that back. Ohio is dull in comparison, plain and simple, and I felt so alive over there. Cheesy? Maybe, but itapos;s true. Spending nearly a month on my own in a foreign place, exploring an environment completely new and exciting...gosh, itapos;s one of those experiences you canapos;t replace.
I want to cry because I miss the friends I made there. Not just London people, but my Beatles buds. We bonded over London, over our immense love for a band thatapos;s changed our lives. I canapos;t explain that to other people, but they know what I mean. The times we had over there are some of the best Iapos;ve ever had, and I feel so close to them and I miss them dearly.
I want to cry because I feel like a part of me is missing and that it wonapos;t be whole until Iapos;m there again. Iapos;m not kidding, either. Iapos;ve dreamed of London since I was 6. Iapos;ve wanted to go there, live there, BE there for so long, and to have it for such a short amount of time and have it taken away again man, as lucky as I was to go, it almost seems unfair to have something so wonderful be put in front of me and then be gone the next minute.
I want to cry, too, because of how lucky I was to go. Iapos;m so HAPPY that I was able to spend so much time there, learn so much there, LIVE so much there. It was the best time of my life, hands down, and I feel privileged to have seen the places Iapos;ve seen, learned the things Iapos;ve learned, and met the people I met there.
Oh, London. Oh, Liverpool. I love you a lot, and I hope to make it back someday soon.
And I love the Beatles, too. More than ever.

Yesterday, girl who regularly sits on the other side of the classroom in philosophy began to ask why Obama seems to be hugging more whites than blacks in his commercials. And then she actually counted the number of black people she saw, and complained of that too. She even complained that he wasnapos;t standing around enough black people during public events.
Are you kidding me? Is this another "is he being black enough" issue? Because it isnapos;t enough that he actually has an urban plan that focuses on domestic issues and support for families, no. He has to have an equal racial distribution surrounding him on a constant basis in order for you to be satisfied.

The point is I havenapos;t gotten my money this month. Iapos;ve been waiting for it. I worked extra hard because I want it I took it personally when there was a complaint bill. I worked so hard. I triple and quadrupled checked. Now I wonapos;t be getting the money. When I ask my manager they ignore me. EVERY TIME. Instead one of them asks me if I want a raise. WHAT THE FUCK. Today I feel good. I got a box of SR4 and SR1. I opened it and actually checked it thoroughly. There was SS sauce and fish sauce in the appropriate boxes, which is up to what I check every time. Then I checked for the green dot The SR1 was in the SR4 box. HELL YES. I am just too genius. I made them fix it.
Side note, I wish my colourful pens werenapos;t running out of ink. It would make my job a hell lot easier.

I hate it when people throw away their drink cups that still have liquid in it, many obviously think nothing of it, but being the person who's taken out some of the garbage, it's annoying because it leaks everywhere, and I have to of course walk all the way to the very back to get the mop and clean it up. I also hate it when people just leave their garbage on top of the table, it's rude, though I don't mind walking around asking if I can take their tray for them (when it's possible, as in I'm not actively cleaning something else or doing something else I've been asked to do) it's annoying that people would just leave it there expecting someone to clean up after them completely. I know it's only fast food, but people are coming out to get something they don't have to cook themselves, or have to do any dishes, I don't think it's horrible for them to dump their trays if they're eating in, on their way out the door. I do offer to take them when I can because our general manager is huge on customer satisfaction. Half the time I offer they decline it, but thank me for the gesture, which is nice, but I don't like those that just leave, and worse they'll leave a big mess too like french fries in the seat and ketchup on the floor.
I also dislike people who yell at you for screwing up their order at the end of the drive thru when all you're doing is reading the final receipt. (Which would be the reason why we're supposed to read the receipt back to make sure we got what they ordered right), a good example would be this woman who had a really difficult burger to begin with, cheese, jalapenos, extra onions, no pickles, and bacon. (and that was her changes to our main burger which is mustard, lettuce, pickles, onions, and tomatoes) Well somewhere in 'the bubble' (what our drive thru thing is called when we have the cashier at one window and then someone else who hands out the food and drinks at a second window)extra onions and no pickles turned into no onions and extra pickles, which is what I read off, and the woman yelled at me for getting it wrong, and I told her that I would get it fixed no problem, it took 10-20 seconds tops to fix it (very easy to remove pickles and add onions), no problem, I understand being annoyed, but her acting as though it was impossible to fix and giving me attitude with 'What do I get for my troubles!?' really ticked me off, and if it was up to me she wouldn't have gotten the two little apple pies my manager at the time gave her, maybe a little cookie or something just in case she was a secret shopper so she wouldn't complain we didn't care at all.
Oh and speaking of secret shoppers, this trainee got reviewed by one, yikes. The report about how we dealt with this customer through the drive thru was bad by our standards, they said that the cashier made no eye contact and was just doing her job, and then they said I was friendlier but made no eye contact or said 'thank you' which apparently you're expected to do. I had no idea, but what I don't get is how could I be friendly without making 'eye contact', I mean when I talk to someone I look at them, (I'm actually not sure if I always look in their eyes...my mother says it's a very me thing to not make eye contact, so maybe I did it without realizing it) and there was a mark about not reading back the receipt, which wasn't all that bad because they've told me I don't have to do it if I don't know it yet. (it's secret fast food code;p) My main manager just told me to focus on making eye contact and saying thank you to everyone, and I'm fine.
Another thing that I find slightly annoying is the whole 'take back tray timer' thing, it's so stupid, the main manager expects someone at the front to come out every 15 minutes and walk up to everyone in the dining room with our orange tray of ketchup, salt pepper, orange peppermints, napkins, sugar and sweetener, and say and I quote "My name is blank, would you like some blank?". What I find stupid about it is that people will be in the middle of eating something when I'm supposed to recite this, I've had some laugh and ask if I'm new, but this is only when I'm working in the front and the main manager is watching when I have to do this or look like I'm reciting it, lol.
What I love about being the newbie, is that the people I'm working with love to talk and talk and tell me everything about the station we're working in, and then I just hear things in general, for example I know who like and dislike our main manager, I know someone who dislikes bugs (lol, okay it's kind of funny, I was just mopping and there was this cricket that was trapped under the mat, and since I'm used to handling crickets in general because I feed Keanu my lizard, I just picked it up so that nobody would squash it or screech, and apparently that freaked out one of the women I'm working with that was just sitting down from a break, I just explained my lizard and that I was moving this outside, she just thought it was weird that I touched it with my bare hand, [for my mom, she's cool with me by the way, one of the people giving me tips on things to avoid to stay out of trouble in general, and very nice], oh well:)), I know who some people dislike, and that kind of stuff. Of course I'd never say anything or hold it against them, but I just think it's interesting how much they tell me.
I also like the managers, they've been very nice and aren't as intimidating as I'd imagine managers to be, but I do respect them and listen. Just learning what is okay around which managers, just by watching everyone else, for example we have a couple who are just funny and you can feel very relaxed and it's okay to kid around, and things get done, and then there's our general manager who's a great guy but when he's around, he's very serious and things are just quieter, lol. Our store also trains managers in our area, so there are about 2-3 managers running around at almost any given time. I've actually asked a couple of times because I get introduced to everyone if they're staying with our store or if they're temporary, because there are so many and the trainees are with us for different periods of times, the one that I was training with in my first couple of days left last week and she had been at the store for 6 weeks, and the one I met just last week is with us for 4 weeks, and then I met one of our own managers over a week after I started so I don't yet know everybody that works in the store.
The one I just met that's ours, well so far he doesn't seem to like me very much, our first meeting was me asking a question about the tea (which I don't remember now) but he wasn't happy that I used two tea bags instead of one, which I didn't know because the person who taught me to make tea told me to use two. And then I saw his facial expressions while reading the secret shopper report I was involved in that was on the bulletin board, he was not happy, what at exactly I'm not sure. I know that on my way out (having been about 45 minutes over my scheduled time because the drive thru was crazy) I asked if it was okay to go home and he strictly told me to make sure that my station was stocked up, which I had, but I guess it was weird because all the other managers I had dealt with before were nice about it, even the general one that a lot of people are very intimidated by, maybe this one might just be strict in general and since he usually works the night shifts doesn't realize I'm very new. I don't know I'll figure it out, just be good and give him no reason to dislike me.:)
Alright I think I'm finally going to shut up with this entry because it's just long, but I'll be back in a bit with other things, and just a heads up, I read my flist almost daily, but haven't had time to comment recently so if anybody suddenly sees a comment to something older than 2 days, that's why.:D
P.S. After all the standing and running around at work I hate the way my feet feel, even with my shoes that are supposed to be good for my feet, my toes ache quite a bit.
