There seems to be a lot of confusion for players concerning an understanding of backswing and downswing. Simply put the downswing is designed to create club momentum at the ball. This is accomplished with your arms swinging in one full motion. Resist the desire to do this with your hands or wrists.
The concept of the backswing has different mechanics than the downswing. The backswing should be slower than the downswing but just as powerful. Always keep in mind your downswing should be 25 to 35% faster than your backswing. Once again this is brought out in practicing your swing.
4. Its All In The Motion
During the backswings motion your left shoulder and hips need to be in correct alignment as your weight is transfered to the right. Of course for left handers this is exactly the opposite. Practicing this will eventually make this a natural movement for you. Also remember to place your hands at waist level for proper execution of this move.

With the exception of certain novelty fireworks, the use of fireworks is not allowed within Rapid City or a one-mile area surrounding the City. 
Please keep in mind that even legal fireworks have the potential for injury as well as the ignition of uncontrolled fire. 
Fireworks are not allowed with the Black Hills Fire Protection District or other State and Federal lands
Areas outside the Fire Protection District and the Rapid City area may have regulations regarding fireworks use set by that areas’ governing body or fire protection district.  Regulations should be checked prior to the use of any fireworks. 
Those choosing to use fireworks should be reminded that any property damage or physical injury caused by the use of legal or illegal may be subject to liability costs involved.  The use of fireworks on private land without the permission of the landowner may also be held in violation of trespassing laws.  
The following lists the City ordinance and State laws pertaining to the use of fireworks as well as the definitions for novelty fireworks.
Rapid City Ordinance 8.24.010
• Allows the sale or use of novelty fireworks within the city or within 1 mile of the city are permitted.  These include:
Party poppers (not to exceed 0.25 grain).
Snappers (not to exceed 0.02 grain).
Sparklers (not to exceed 3.5 oz.).
Toy caps (not to exceed 0.25 grain).
Flitter sparklers (not to exceed 0.2 oz.).
• All other consumer fireworks are prohibited.
South Dakota Laws
• 34-37-11. Sale or use prohibited in forests, parks and other specified areas Exception Violation as misdemeanor. No person may sell or cause to be sold, discharge or cause to be discharged, any pyrotechnics of any description whatever within the exterior boundaries of the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District, national forest, national park, state forest, or any land owned or leased by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks. However, the secretary of the Department of Game, Fish and Parks may, by written authorization, permit pyrotechnic displays, sales, or exhibits on land owned or leased by the department unless otherwise prohibited by statute. Any violation of this section which occurs on any land owned or leased by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Any other violation of this chapter is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
• 34-35-15. Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District Area included. To protect the timber on areas subject to unusual fire dangers, there is hereby created the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District, consisting of all that part of the state described by metes and bounds as follows: Commencing at a point on the Wyoming-South Dakota state line at the junction of Interstate Highway 90 at the state line; thence east and southeast along Interstate Highway 90 to Whitewood; thence southeast along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way through Sturgis, Tilford, Piedmont, and Black Hawk to Rapid City; thence south along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way through Hermosa, Fairburn, and Buffalo Gap to the Cheyenne River; thence west and northwest along the Cheyenne River to the Wyoming-South Dakota state line; thence north along said state line to the place of beginning, excepting there from areas within the limits of third class municipalities.
• 34-37-10. Period and times during which retail sales permitted. No person, firm, or corporation may offer fireworks for sale to individuals at retail before the twenty-seventh day of June and after the fifth day of July. Any person obtaining the special sixty-six day or the special fifty-seven day retail licenses may sell fireworks to out-of-state residents for the periods of time designated in §   34-37-2.2. Retail sales are not permitted after twelve a.m. or prior to seven a.m. from the twenty-seventh day of June through the fifth day of July.
American Pyrotechnics Association definitions:
Party Popper.
Small plastic or paper item containing not more than 0.25 grains (16 mg) of explosive composition that is friction sensitive. A string protruding from the device is usually pulled to ignite it. This item expels nonflammable paper streamers or other nonflammable novelties, or both, and produces a small report.
Snapper.
Small, paper-wrapped item containing not more than 0.02 grains (1 mg) of explosive composition coated on small bits of sand, and packaged with sawdust in individual containers of not more than 50 units. When dropped, the device explodes, producing a small report.
Sparkler.
Wire or stick coated with pyrotechnic composition that cannot exceed 3.5 oz (100 g) per item that produces a shower of sparks upon ignition. These items cannot contain magnesium, except that magnalium (magnesium-aluminum alloy) is permitted. Items containing any chlorate or perchlorate salts cannot exceed 0.2 oz (5 g) of composition per item. (These items are not regulated as explosives for transportation purposes. However, some meet the criteria for flammable solids.)
Toy Caps.
Toy plastic or paper caps for toy pistols in sheets, strips, rolls, or individual caps, containing not more than an average of 16 mg (0.25 grains) of explosive composition per cap. Toy caps are described as “Fireworks UN0336” and classed as “1.4G.” Toy caps are to be packed in inside packages constructed of cardboard not less than 0.013 in. (0.33 mm) in thickness, metal not less than 0.008 in. (0.2 mm) in thickness, noncombustible plastic not less than 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) in thickness, or a composite blister package consisting of cardboard not less than 0.013 in. (0.33 mm) in thickness, and noncombustible plastic not less than 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) in thickness, which are to provide a complete enclosure. The minimum dimensions of each side or end of such package are to be not less than 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) in height. The number of caps in these inside packages are to be limited so that no more than 10 grains (650 mg) of explosive composition are to be packed into 1 in.3 (16.4 cm3) of space. In addition, no more than 17.5 grains (1138 mg) of the explosive composition of toy caps are to be packed in any inside container.
Flitter Sparkler.
Narrow paper tube attached to a stick or wire and filled with not more than 0.2 oz (5 g) of pyrotechnic composition that produces color and sparks upon ignition. The paper at one end of the tube is ignited to make the device function.

Thanks to those of you who weighed in on Monday about my golf swing. We went to the driving range again last night and I managed to fix one of the most serious problems I hadnt noticed before: a bent RIGHT arm. Once Id watched the Gif image a few times and thought hard about your feedback—Shawn, particularly, decided it looked which is science, people, SCIENCE—I realized it didnt feel quite right on the follow-through. And then, I realized it wasnt feeling right on the follow through because I wasnt hitting the ball with both arms straight. I think that may have had something to do with over-swinging, whatever. But after Id thought about it, I hit a few balls last night focusing on bringing both arms through straight, at least to make contact with the ball. It felt weird at first, like I was leaning back into the shot, but I persevered, and soon, the feel of the swing started to groove itself into my muscles. Result: slice considerably reduced. Ball consistently going where I aimed.
The most obvious difference was with the driver, but I also noticed a difference with the irons, and peculiarly, with the pitching wedge, too. I found I was getting a lot more loft and a lot less distancemore backspin. Im now hitting the clubs consistent distances, too. A pitching wedge between 80-100 yards, and then 5-10 more yards per club through to a 4 iron, which is going around 160. The driver, with a perfect shot, is going just over 200. With a bad shot, its going 20. Consistency would be nice.
Plus, golf reading! Ive been reading Darrin Gees Seven Principles of Golf: Mastering the Mental Game on and Off the Course. Its a Zen manual to achieving inner piece on and off the golf course, and Id like to say it was useless, but mate, you should see how much balance and vision I have since reading it. The biggest practical tips I took from the book are: 1.Imagine your feet are planting roots down into the ground while youre swinging. 2.Develop a pre-shot routine that blocks out all distraction. 3.Visualize the path of the golf ball before you hit it. 4.Commit to that shot 100% when you swing through the ball. Also, theres a lot in there about relaxing and letting your mind go on the course—not dwelling on bad shots, or on good shots, really, just accepting that golf is golf, and that sometimes youre going to hit bad shots even when you do everything right. If thats not a metaphor for life, I dont know what is.

The most important thing this trip proves is what's in our hearts. If we can't just say it's a big stinking sad thing, then something is missing from our hearts.

We need to respond to Randy Olsen's video, comparing the two trips. Do we respond with denial? Or by feeling bad?

One response is right...the one that makes us redouble our vow to do something about our ocean. So that a raft trip in 2058 sees more fish than plastic. I won't be around to make that trip, but I want it to happen.

We're not particularly inclined to believe them, but the whispers that Apple is about to bump the top-end iPhone capacity to 32GB are getting harder to ignore -- especially since 8GB inventory is drying up, leading to speculation that's it's going to be dropped as soon as next week. We think the timing's a little odd on the heels of the Let's Rock iPod refresh, but considering the rampant speculation that Apple was forced to bump the nano to 16GB and drop the "limited edition" 4GB model entirely at the last minute in response to the new Zune lineup we suppose it makes competitive sense. AppleInsider also says customers will once again get the option to activate in-home, but we haven't heard anything about that -- we'll see what happens in the next few days.

An out pouring of emotion swept over me after watching this movie.  I am deeply touched.  Robert Redford has always touched me in a emotional way ever since I saw him in a movie with Barbara Striesand when I was a young girl. 
 Can you remember the movie that they both starred in?  It was a movie about a young woman and man who could never seem to get their relationship to click for one reason or another.  There was a song,  Memoriesthat I would play on the piano.
  Anywaylet me tell you,  Robert Redford has not lost his touch.  Robert Redford is not given the due respect that he deserves.  I am truly touched by this movie,  The Legend of Bagger Vance.  I had been watching this movie tonight with my mother.  She watched it the night before with my son.  I had no idea this movie was about the game of golf. 
 I was pulled to watch the movie when I was in Best Buy the other day.  The price of the movie was a bargin.$6.99!!  So I turned over the package that it was in a saw Will Smith,  and Mat Damon.  Two actors that I enjoy watching in movies. 
 I thoughtthis must be okay.  My son tried to put it away I said NO!  I was right.  I also think my son was deeply touched by this movie.  You see,  my son  just started playing golf this summer.  I have been trying to get him to find his   when he plays golf. 
 The movie addressed the feeling of being PART OF THE FIELDthe movie portrayed a man that had suffered pain;  and a sense of great loss and failure as a  World War I Vet and the redemption of his soul from a barren place deep within himself.  The lead character was Junna,  Captain Junna, ( played by Mat Damon).  
 The premise of the movie is that when Junna had been a young man,  as young as 16 years old,  he had been extremely talented in golf.  He was heralded  as a stellar player,  even to the point of hitting a golf ball so far that the game had to be stopped for twenty minutes in order to measure the distance of the hit.
  He had gone to war and returned a broken man.  He became somewhat of a recluse and stayed a away from the home town debutante that he loved.  However,  after the Great Depression came,  the  debutantes father had completed building a golf course. 
 Despite the beauty of the new golf course in Savanna Georgia,  no one came and  it appeared that the debutantes father would loose on his investment.  Hence forth he shoots himself.  Thus his daughter had the towns men attempting to have her sell the  golf course and cut her losses.  However,  being strong willed,  she decided to fight.  She decided to have a golf tournment.  The tournament was to be played by two well known men.
  However, the men of Savannah wanted a native Savannah player to also play in this $10,000.00 golf tournament.  A young boy who had been following the old newspaper articles about Junna suggested him.  Many people did not believe that he would play.  But the little boy had a strong belief that he would be able to get Junna to play. 
 He ran from the town hall meeting with a shout from a elder man who stated,  Run with WINGED SANDALS ON YOUR FEET!! The young boy finds Junna playing cards with some men late at night.  However the boy was not afraid.  He simply explained himself.  Junna told him that he would not play. 
 However, when Junna left the building that he had been playing cards in and entered his house he found the towns men standing in his living room. They also requested him to play in the $10,000.00 tournament.  He flatly told them no. 
 They left,  but the little boy,  (who is played by Jack Lemon in his later years ,  another stellar actor who has always touched my heart)  fell asleep on a chair in Junnas house. Suddenly the wind blew the curtians in Junnas living room and his love    the debutante stood in his living room and inquired as to why he would not play.
  Mat Damon, Junna repliedI have lost my Swing.   The young x-love of his tried to presuade him by attempting to use her kiss.  However, he did not change his mind. 
Later that night, he went outside of his house and began swinging into the night.  He began hitting one golf ball after another into the dark.  He had two lights on either side.  Suddenly a man approached from the darkness.   Enter,  Will Smith as Bagger Vance.  Wow,  Will Smith never ceases to amaze me!  He is beyond stellar. 
 His approach to his character was thoughtful.  He played such a role as to give rise to tears from me!  The words,  and the low key approach almost made chills go up my spine.  I know this is not a recent movie.  But this movie was right on time. 
 It was not a movie just about playing golf,  but anyone could appreciate the message within it. Robert Redford took a simple  concept of play the gamenot to winbut just to play itand broadened it to life and how to live it.  How to come back from depression,  from loss,  from regret,  and begin again, and find your place in the field.
  Will Smiths character takes Mat Damon ( who is visibly over come by his past in the war, and his regrets into playing golf and overcoming his loss will to enjoy life for itself.  Bagger Vance spoke softly and quietly to the spirit of Junna and enveloped him into the spirit of the world around him,  made him listen to nature, and the earth and recapture his swing. 
 In the end Bagger Vance left Junna the same way he came to him.in the dark, yet truly seeing the light of his growth mentally,  emotionally,  spiritually,  and also truly playing the game of LIFE all over again. 
 The little boy grows up to be (Jack Lemon),  who narates the movie,  and appears to die on the golf course as an elder man,  and then he gets up and walks to the horizon where Bagger Vance his biding him to come.  So touching,  the tale of human growth through adversity and heartache.
The movie was playing again, while I slept earlier this evening, and as I awoke I observed the ending I was again touched by the attitude of humble, simple life  wisdom of Bagger Vance.   At one point,  it appeared that Junnas golf ball and gotten hit into the trees,  This was a turning point for him and the movie. 
 He looked at the ball laying on the dead leaves inside the woods and suddenly his mind took him back to the war and the loss.  He nearly picked up the ball,  possibly to get it out of that enviornment that had brought back those haunting memoiries.  However,  Bagger Vance asked him, Do you want another club? 
 That shocked him, back to reality.  Junna began to sweat and tell Bagger Vance that he could not do it.  Bagger Vance gave him that simple quiet wisdom and stated an even deeper assurance,  I have never left youalmost in a God like wayspiritual. 
 Suddenly Junna hit the ball out of the trees to the amazement of his audience that had been waiting just outside the trees during the tournament. 
This was such a touching moment.  The music was just right as well.
Go rent or buy this movie.  Very touching,  very loving,  very compassionate for those who have lost and want to get their swing back.

An out pouring of emotion swept over me after watching this movie.  I am deeply touched.  Robert Redford has always touched me in a emotional way ever since I saw him in a movie with Barbara Striesand when I was a young girl. 
 Can you remember the movie that they both starred in?  It was a movie about a young woman and man who could never seem to get their relationship to click for one reason or another.  There was a song,  Memoriesthat I would play on the piano.
  Anywaylet me tell you,  Robert Redford has not lost his touch.  Robert Redford is not given the due respect that he deserves.  I am truly touched by this movie,  The Legend of Bagger Vance.  I had been watching this movie tonight with my mother.  She watched it the night before with my son.  I had no idea this movie was about the game of golf. 
 I was pulled to watch the movie when I was in Best Buy the other day.  The price of the movie was a bargin.$6.99!!  So I turned over the package that it was in a saw Will Smith,  and Mat Damon.  Two actors that I enjoy watching in movies. 
 I thoughtthis must be okay.  My son tried to put it away I said NO!  I was right.  I also think my son was deeply touched by this movie.  You see,  my son  just started playing golf this summer.  I have been trying to get him to find his   when he plays golf. 
 The movie addressed the feeling of being PART OF THE FIELDthe movie portrayed a man that had suffered pain;  and a sense of great loss and failure as a  World War I Vet and the redemption of his soul from a barren place deep within himself.  The lead character was Junna,  Captain Junna, ( played by Mat Damon).  
 The premise of the movie is that when Junna had been a young man,  as young as 16 years old,  he had been extremely talented in golf.  He was heralded  as a stellar player,  even to the point of hitting a golf ball so far that the game had to be stopped for twenty minutes in order to measure the distance of the hit.
  He had gone to war and returned a broken man.  He became somewhat of a recluse and stayed a away from the home town debutante that he loved.  However,  after the Great Depression came,  the  debutantes father had completed building a golf course. 
 Despite the beauty of the new golf course in Savanna Georgia,  no one came and  it appeared that the debutantes father would loose on his investment.  Hence forth he shoots himself.  Thus his daughter had the towns men attempting to have her sell the  golf course and cut her losses.  However,  being strong willed,  she decided to fight.  She decided to have a golf tournment.  The tournament was to be played by two well known men.
  However, the men of Savannah wanted a native Savannah player to also play in this $10,000.00 golf tournament.  A young boy who had been following the old newspaper articles about Junna suggested him.  Many people did not believe that he would play.  But the little boy had a strong belief that he would be able to get Junna to play. 
 He ran from the town hall meeting with a shout from a elder man who stated,  Run with WINGED SANDALS ON YOUR FEET!! The young boy finds Junna playing cards with some men late at night.  However the boy was not afraid.  He simply explained himself.  Junna told him that he would not play. 
 However, when Junna left the building that he had been playing cards in and entered his house he found the towns men standing in his living room. They also requested him to play in the $10,000.00 tournament.  He flatly told them no. 
 They left,  but the little boy,  (who is played by Jack Lemon in his later years ,  another stellar actor who has always touched my heart)  fell asleep on a chair in Junnas house. Suddenly the wind blew the curtians in Junnas living room and his love    the debutante stood in his living room and inquired as to why he would not play.
  Mat Damon, Junna repliedI have lost my Swing.   The young x-love of his tried to presuade him by attempting to use her kiss.  However, he did not change his mind. 
Later that night, he went outside of his house and began swinging into the night.  He began hitting one golf ball after another into the dark.  He had two lights on either side.  Suddenly a man approached from the darkness.   Enter,  Will Smith as Bagger Vance.  Wow,  Will Smith never ceases to amaze me!  He is beyond stellar. 
 His approach to his character was thoughtful.  He played such a role as to give rise to tears from me!  The words,  and the low key approach almost made chills go up my spine.  I know this is not a recent movie.  But this movie was right on time. 
 It was not a movie just about playing golf,  but anyone could appreciate the message within it. Robert Redford took a simple  concept of play the gamenot to winbut just to play itand broadened it to life and how to live it.  How to come back from depression,  from loss,  from regret,  and begin again, and find your place in the field.
  Will Smiths character takes Mat Damon ( who is visibly over come by his past in the war, and his regrets into playing golf and overcoming his loss will to enjoy life for itself.  Bagger Vance spoke softly and quietly to the spirit of Junna and enveloped him into the spirit of the world around him,  made him listen to nature, and the earth and recapture his swing. 
 In the end Bagger Vance left Junna the same way he came to him.in the dark, yet truly seeing the light of his growth mentally,  emotionally,  spiritually,  and also truly playing the game of LIFE all over again.

I did not know it would be that soon. A Japanese colleague mentioned that he plays some golf (or practice in the driving range) and I asked if we can do it together sometime in the future. Two days after he came back to me with another jap colleague who seemed to be more keen about the matter. And they set the schedule four days after. i said yes thinking at the back of my mind when was the last time I had a hold on a golf club – it was about 11 years back. And I was not even good.
It was gloomy and raining the day before we were set to play, and my ‘golf comrades’ were doubtful if it was going to be sunny or at least fine enough that Saturday. The japanese and Mongolian forecasts predicted opposing weathers. So we just agreed that if it was not raining that morning, we will proceed with the plan.
I got up at 6. had tinola (chicken stew) for breakfast, done with my shower at 715. still gloomy morning but no rains so far. Also got my call confirming as planned.
The trip was about 70 kms away from the capital. There was no rain during the ride. I and 3 japs were set to play 18 holes that day.
We reached terelj where the only golf course in mongolia can be found. It is a national park, and famous for its distinct rock formations. The sun was not out. But there was no rain either. The clubs were put on carts. My colleagues had their own while I rented mine. We had female caddies – young college students doing part time work on weekends.
I did my first shot – missed the ball. Several attempts till I hit it and left hole number 1 a few meters away. My older jap colleague couldn’t help himself from giggling.
After two hours on the fairways and greens, it started drizzling. Consistent enough to wet our shirts and jackets. To each his own mishaps in the hits and swings. After 9 holes and about 5 hours, we decided to cut our play short. i ranked last.
We proceeded to a nearby hotel restaurant for lunch. It was fun despite the wet and overcast weather. I learned a lot from my jap acquaintances - some basics of golf, Japanese golf terms like ‘tempura ball’ (flying ball), views on working in Mongolia, and other personal stuff. It was not just a weekend about hitting a ball to get into a hole.
Now I think I will have a new sport to be good at.
