His text is indeed a question about the truth in photography: what is "in" a picture? What is its relation to reality? How external is what we see in a picture? These are not easy questionswere not easy in the analogous days, and have become more complicated in the digital days in some (but not in all) respects. It is too late in the day for me to even try to approach the question intellectually. Perhaps Van Alphen was not so crazy when he tried to do it with a photo surrounding his text. Roland Barthes' 'Camera lucida' with his musings on the photo of his deceased mother are not a very readable alternative... Strange that death plays a role in Van Alphen's picture as much as in Barthes' classic text on photography. Or has Van Alphen read Barthes'text? For although we see only the 'external intensity' of the photo, it may lead to the thought of where it came from: what was the photographer trying to tell us? Why was s/he trying to tell us precisely this? That is where Van Alphen's reading on photography may come into play.

In a land full of mountains, great trees and many waters, legends of mystical creatures echo throughout the landscape. It seems that in every valley, on every hilltop, or in every cave, there is a troll waiting to be found. Huldra, the elfin sirens of the forest, either bless you or curse you with their alluring beauty, and Thor, the god of thunder, will throw down his hammer and cause havoc in the land.
Norway is certainly magical and the legends of old still have a place at every campfire. I love hearing about the Norse folktales and how simple stories have become legends. So, on our trip to Senja island, Hulder and Troll Park was a must-see.
The family park is in the middle of Senja island and is a perfect stop for travellers. It has made its mark in history with a Guinness Book world record by having the biggest troll since 1997. Inside the Troll is a fairytale land created from Senja troll legends. In summer, there are troll shows, story-telling and even a disco for the kids.
Even though Hulder and Troll Park is one of the most popular family attractions in Northern Norway it still has that special charm. This is because it is not a large commercially-run theme park but a delightful small family business. The whole family is involved in performing in the shows, making the troll creatures and serving Norwegian grub in the cafe.
The creator of Hulder and Troll Park, Leif Rubach, is widely cherished as the Troll Father. When he is not performing in the shows or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, he is sitting at his craft table in the Hulderheimen Cultural Centre hammering away at his pewter handwork. There is a whole shop of special handicrafts - my favourite were the Mitten Trolls. They were inspired by Troll Fathers childhood in Gryllefjord, a little town in the next fjord over. After a hard day on the sea, fishermen would hang their mittens on the baiting shed to dry. To deter their children from playing on the pier, parents would tell stories about the little trolls that lived in the fishermens mittens.
There are lots of things to see in the Hulderheimen Cultural Centre. The cafe is very rustic and the walls are filled with pictures and stories from the area. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the old fishermen and intriguing characters who worked in the nickel mine down the road. The gallery is themed on the Senja troll myths and my penny dropped when I saw the likeness of the trolls and mountains.
As we headed into the sunset, the landscape was transformed - what once were majestic blue mountains were now gigantic trolls snoozing in the twilight.

Fiesta time. The wonderful festival of football that was Euro 2008 finished in style last night, settled by that stylish finisher named Fernando Torres. In ending 44 years of hurt without a trophy, Spain possessed too much heart, too much invention, and too much Torres for Germany.

The Spanish striker took his first-half goal expertly, racing through and lifting the ball over the otherwise excellent Jens Lehmann, but there was steel to these Spaniards as well as silk. Xavi was again dominant in midfield, making tackles, shaping attacks, driving Spain to their first silverware since the 1964 European Championships.

As the Spanish partied in the Ernst Happel Stadium, Let Me Entertain You pounded from every speaker. Good choice. It was Spain's mission statement set to music. Entertainment was the name of Spain's game, flair flowing from the elegant feet of Xavi, Torres, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Ramos, Andres Iniesta and David Silva.

A tournament that celebrated attacking brio, that treated billion-strong global audiences to match after compelling match has showcased what can be achieved through a commitment to thrill.

Torres and company make worthy champions. This was a victory not only for Spain but for all who love open, attacking football. Spain's football lifts the soul.

Shortly after the final whistle, as the Spanish formed a guard of honour, Joachim Low led his vanquished, shattered players on the most brutal journey in sport, the losers' climb up the podium. To collect medals that none wanted, the Germans had to walk within inches of the Henri Delaunay trophy. Lehmann touched it longingly. So near and yet so far.

Low's men had given everything, played exciting football at times during their odyssey through Euro 2008, especially in defeating Portugal in the quarter-finals, but it was not enough. As hard as Michael Ballack worked, Spain were simply superior in all departments.

Germany's captain, his bloodied face revealing the intensity of the midfield battle, was consoled by Michel Platini, Uefa's president. As Ballack progressed along the long line of administrators, royals, and Chancellors, the Chelsea midfielder behaved with remarkable dignity, smiling and making small talk, when inside he must have been ripped to pieces, his heart close to breaking.

His second European final defeat of the summer, Ballack's career has contained too many near-misses. He then stood back and applauded the victors up. Torres, a Spanish flag wrapped around his waist, ran a finger along the base of the trophy.

And then came Iker Casillas, Spain's captain. Platini knows what it is like to receive the trophy, as France's inspiration in 1984, and now he handed it across, passing it into the safest of hands, those of Casillas. Spain's magnificent fans went wild with delight, dancing, waving their flags, banging their drums as Casillas lifted the trophy to the heavens.

Team and support soon embraced, Casillas, Xavi and Torres leading the charge over to their fans, Torres even jumping into the crowd to find friends and relatives. In truth, Torres had not been at his electric best in reaching the final but he had immediately begun reminding everyone of his Liverpool form, perhaps inspired by the pre-match rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone.

Torres swiftly linked with Fabregas, who was playing the Steven Gerrard support role to Torres in Luis Aragones' 4-1-3-1-1 formation. His goal, when it came, was conceived in Villarreal and Barcelona, in the quick-thinking of Marcos Senna and Xavi, two of the players of a star-studded tournament.

Spain would be hopeless on Mastermind - too many passes - but they took a more direct route for Torres' stunning 33rd-minute strike. Two fast passes down the middle opened Germany up. Senna found Xavi, who instantly swept the ball down the inside-right channel for Torres to chase. Philipp Lahm and Lehmann still guarded the avenue to goal. Not well enough.

For these are the openings Torres craves, a defender reacting too slowly and then a keeper diving at his feet. Having outpaced Lahm with almost embarrassing ease, Torres glided into the area. As Lehmann threw himself forward, Torres lifted the ball over the prostrate German.

It was a glittering goal that echoed another final gem by a Liverpool striker, Kenny Dalglish's elegant chip over the Bruges keeper, Birger Jensen, to win the 1978 European Cup at Wembley.

Yet Spain had been forced to survive a testing start. They knew Germany represented tough opposition. They knew Low would have done his homework, looking to exploit any weaknesses.

Instructed by their coach, Germany targeted the space behind Ramos, aware that Spain's right-back loved to push upfield. Ramos briefly suffered a torrid time. Miroslav Klose, Ballack and Thomas Hitzlsperger almost profited from Ramos' shaky start.

For all Germany's initial swagger, for all Lukas Podolski's pace briefly worrying Ramos, Spain gradually imposed themselves. When Christoph Metzelder deflected Iniesta's cross goalwards only Lehmann's sharp reflexes rescued his team.

Germany sensed the rising tide of Spanish ambition, saw that Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas, the Three Amigos, were beginning to cause havoc. Ballack sought to break the baton of Spain's conductor, Xavi, stamping on the Barcelona midfielder's ankle.

Spain would not be cowed and began building to their first-half goal. Fabregas sent Ramos rampaging down the right, the full-back lifting over a steepling cross that Torres, timing his climb superbly to elude Per Mertesacker, headed against the post. Closer and closer.

Torres' next visit to Germany's box decided the final, only his second goal of the tournament sending a surge of joy flooding through his team's passionate supporters.

To each Spanish fan here in Ultravox's fabled Vienna, thinking "this means one-nothing to me", the first half continued to go their way. Senna accidentally headed Ballack, slicing open the skin around the German's right eye. Stitched up, mopped down, Ballack stormed back into the fray, seemingly intent on picking fights.

Stirred by their captain, Germany were more menacing after the break, Ballack himself volleying just wide. Spain risked losing their cool.

Silva pushed his forehead into Podolski's face and was lucky to escape expulsion. Displaying their classier side, Spain hit back. Ramos, Iniesta and Senna all went close. As the clock counted down, the Oles began. Fiesta time.

What is handball?

Handball is one of the fastest indoor sports. It is an Olympic sport played in over 150 countries. It is a sport where players are encouraged to be athletic, be flamboyant and inventive, and above all you work together as a team. It helps you keep fit and healthy.

It is a team game where you:

1. shoot
2. catch
3. jump
4. block
5. pass
6. save

The Players

Each team has 12 players. However, only 7 players take the court at any one time and one of these must be the goal keeper. The remaining players are substitutions during the game. They enter and leave from the substitution area of the court. Players alternate between an attacking position and a defending position, depending on who has possession of the ball. The goal keeper of each team wears a different colour from the rest of the team.

Basic Rules

A player is allowed . . .
-To run with the ball for 3 steps
-To hold the ball for 3 seconds
-Unlimited dribble with 3 steps allowed before and after dribbling (no double-dribble).

A player is NOT allowed . . .
-To endanger an opponent with the ball.
-To pull, hit or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent.
-To contact the ball below the knee.
-To dive on the floor for a rolling or stationary ball.

Defending the Opponent: A player is allowed to use the torso of the body to obstruct an opponent with or without the ball. However, using the outstretched arms or legs to obstruct, push, hold, trip or hit is NOT allowed. The attacking player is not allowed to charge into a defensive player.

Throw-In: A throw-in is awarded when ball goes out of bounds on the sideline or when the ball is last touched by a defensive player (excluding the goalie) and goes out of bounds over the endline. The throw-in is taken from the spot where the ball crossed the sideline, or if it crossed the endline, from the nearest corner. The thrower must place one foot on the sideline to execute the throw. All opposing players must stay 3 meters away from the ball.

Referee Throw: A referee throw is awarded when . . . The ball touches anything above the court after a simultaneous infringement of the rules after simultaneous possession of the ball.
The Referee throws the ball vertically between two opposing players. The jumping players may grab the ball or tap it to a teammate. All other players must be 3 meters away from the throw. The referee throw is always taken at center court.

Free-Throw: For a minor foul or violation, a free-throw is awarded to the opponent at the exact spot it took place. If the foul or violation occurs between the goal area line and the 9-meter line, the throw is taken from the nearest post outside the 9-meter line. The thrower must keep one foot in contact with the floor, then pass or shoot.

7-Meter Throw: The 7-meter throw is awarded when . . .
-A foul destroys a clear chance to score
-The goalie carries the ball back into his or her own goal area
-A court player intentionally plays the ball to his or her own goalie in the goal area and the goalie touches the ball
-A defensive player enters his or her goal area to gain an advantage over an attacking player in possession of the ball.
-All players must be outside the free-throw line when the throw is taken. The player taking the throw has 3 seconds to shoot after referee's whistle. Any player may take the 7-meter throw.
-Goal-Throw: A goal-throw is awarded when . . . The ball rebounds off the goalkeeper over the endline The ball is thrown over the endline by the attacking team.
-The goalie takes the throw inside the goal area and is not restricted by the 3-step/3-second rule.

But I didnt managed to catch the last part of the 2nd episode because because because my MRT entered the tunnel! So frustrating can! Cause if I didnt board that MRT, I would be late for my meeting and hence late for the movie Kallang Roar!! And I totally forgot to catch the repeat broadcast of the programme that night!
And speaking of Kallang Roar, actually I kinda liked the movie. I always like to see shows that are touching, that have elements of inside. I think those scenes trigger an emotional burst from me and I just felt extremely teary when I see the scenes showing Singaporeans waving the Singapore flag and supporting the soccer team. I think those scenes are very heart warming and sometimes I just cant stand it and tears will roll down.
If you followed this blog long enough right, you would actually know that Im a lil more towards the emotional side de. Somethings just cannot be controlled ya? While watching Jap dramas also! Those sports related ones right, will have support from fans. But those support from teammates are the ones I found most touching! When teammates support each other, helped them in times of need and everything, those scenes are unbearable!

Sorry, it's been a while since the last time I wrote somehting.. It has been a busy month, been studying, studying and studying some more.. Have my first exam in a month and have LOTS to get through..

So, not much have happened since last time, I have quite a boring life :P But there is something I want YOU to get involved with, at least if you're a fan of Brandon Routh! It's a movement called "Bring Routh Back." So, if you like Superman and Brandon, you should know that he played Superman in the 2006 big budget movie "Superman Returns". Now we hear that he might not return as Superman ever again, which is a shame, since he was PERFECT as Superman! If you want Brandon Routh back as Superman, then please visit bluetights and see what you can do to bring him back as Superman!

Okay, I actually don't know all the details, and the most of the story is in the link I posted above, but I can give a short summary of what the movement is about. Warner Bros is thinking about another Superman movie, that is the good news. The bad news is that Warner Bros are thinking of making an entirely new franchise, with an ENTIRLY new cast! That means no Brandon Routh! I think it's a shame, since Routh made an amazing Superman. His interpretation was flawless. Warner Bros, the movie company that did Superman Returns, wants an entirly new cast, apparently the new franchise is going to portray a "darker" Superman, and they feel the only way to do that is to revamp Superman. The new movie Warner Bros wants is going to be caled "Superman Reboot". They will also dump Bryan Singer, the director of SR. But the thing is that Bryan Singer has an alternative to their movie. It's called "Superman: Man of Steel" and is a great movie, and he will keep Brandon Routh as Superman! Warner Bros was unhappy with the way the first movie turned out, cause they thought it was too much romance, not enough action. But that was the whole point. Bryan Singer said himself that he was going to reintroduce the characters, letting people getting used to the cast. He said that was the purpose of the first movie, and the romance involved. He always planned on doing a second one, so SR was always supposed to be the first chapter, where the main point was to reintroduce the characters. I think it's a shame that Warner Bros is actually thinking of dumping Bryan Singer, the movie and the entire cast! He obviously has some great ideas for the new movie. And I think Warner Bros made the desicion a bit fast, and a new franchise is also a bit too soon.

My first bet of the season as far as Serie A goes. I've been monitoring the teams in the first 3 rounds and had several leans for today but I'm only going to tip Lecce when they play Inter on the road tonight.
