The Shakeys V-league is an intercollegiate womens volleyball league in the Philippines formed in 2004 under the management group led by former PBA commissioner Jun Bernardino and pizza company Shakeys. Jun Bernandino invited his fellow Ateneo alumni Moying Martelino, Tony Boy Liao, Ricky Palou and Jun Capistrano in the 2nd conference of the first season to be included in governing the Shakeys V-league.
The member teams are from different schools around Metro Manila with UAAP powerhouses FEU (Far Eastern University), ADU (Adamson University), ADMU (Ateneo de Manila University). NCAA powerhouses SSC-R (San Sebastian College Recolletos), Collegio de San Juan de Letran,  Philippine Christian University and v-league newcomer De La Salle College of Saint Benilde and the WNCAA champion LPU (Lyceum of the Philippines). The teams that also participated are the back-to-back Defending v-league champion UST (University of Santo Tomas), UAAP powerhouses DLSU (De La Salle University).
The UST Lady Tigresses won the first-ever v-league championship in 2004 defeating the La Salle Lady Archers.
This year (2008), each team was allowed to acquire 2 guest players to boost their line-up in which they can allow either a former member of a schools volleyball line-up or anyone outside of it. All games (meaning from eliminations to finals) were held at the Arena in San Juan City. TV network National Broadcasting Network was signed up to cover the said prestigious tournament.

Im eating macadamia nut Cadbury chocolate. Someone is trying to learn the F chord. A few others are playing Uno and another is making tea. I think Im getting green tea, but I cant be sure. Its Sunday night, Im feeling relaxed after my day off and I eagerly await the arrival of the majority of those coming on Action for Life. Theyll be here at 4am this morning. Excellent.

As for this entry, it has nothing to do with that. Its about haircuts.

My hair, at least whats left of it, has taken on a number of styles in the years. I probably topped out in second grade when moms put me up to a so-called . It put me about ten years ahead of the same look that became popular in New Jersey when I was graduating high school (and which made you distinctly and easily recognizable as tri-state). The cut, combined with missing my two front teeth, made me a hot target for the females in Ms. Tretters Parkway Manor Elementary class. That all changed when I actually moved to New Jersey later that year and found that I was ten years ahead of the curve and the had lost its magical touch.

Regardless, hair grows and so did my adventures with it. Mostly parted to the side through junior high. Getting longer and stranger in high school, including a go at bleaching during my senior spring break with some guys on my baseball team (this included getting my ear pierced at a Wal-Martwhich is another story). In college I shaved my head for the first time. Actually, Andrew shaved my head. First taking it to a one blade before convincing me that I needed to go all the way. He bicked my head in Base Rich and Im still sure that this marked the day that my hair began its official retreat for the rest of my life.

From there, it got long, it got short, I shaved it again and finally realized once and for all this spring that I will probably keep it very short for the rest of my life. (Unless I get cool like one of those old dudes who rocks a kind-of half-bald ponytail. Its not that its a good look aesthetically, but it symbolizes a point that those men have reached becoming completely detached from all need to impress anyone.)

When I got to India three years ago, I fought the inevitable haircut for a long time. Theres a lot of variables with a haircut in India. Will they understand what I want? Will they cut my ear with rusty scissors? Will they do anythingunexpected?

Most of these fears were allayed when I looked around. Almost every man in a city or town in India is immaculately kept from the neck up. Perfectly coifed hair, neatly trimmed beards and mustaches so nice that they make clean cut boys green with envy.
Once I crossed the first Indian Barber Shop threshold, I never looked back. The tidiness of the trim and the fact that they will give you a proper facial shave (with straight blade) make it an experience not to be missed on any trip to the sub-continent.

With relish, I hopped in the back of Sumo and took the 3-minute blast down to Panchgani town. Out the back door, I first bought a volleyball for a game later in the afternoon and then took it next door to the local barber shop.

The shop itself only measures about 6 by 15, three chairs for the chop and the regular six for the random dudes who always seem to find their way into a barber shop but dont do anything there. The proprietor welcomed me in and offered me a seat. How much for the haircut? I asked. He returned with the most classic of all Indian male gestures. This being the regular head-waggle along with hand move that looks like he is gently back-slapping the air in front of him. In short, this means, t worry about it, well figure this all out later. I fell for this move once before and thus the reason I asked for the cost out right. Still, I decided to roll the dice, seeing what he would give me and try to bargain post-cut.

I sat down and looked for a place to put the volleyball. It could have gone anywhere, but we oddly settled on the basket on the vanity which he actually used for his combs and scissors and would need to access more frequently then any other part of the entire store. Surprised and slightly amazed, I focused on the work ahead hoping he would understand my single directive:

He trimmed and I made small talk with one of the other patrons who wanted to take me on a tour of the neighboring town. I also took the chance to survey the room. A remarkable collection of old stuff including a radio from the 50s, an beautiful set of drawing of popular Indian haircuts from the 30s and a TV playing satellite movies. I sat back and enjoyed, this, one of my true guilty pleasures of living in India. I sighed out. It would be my last moment of peace.

With the haircut looking in hand, he asked me if I wanted a shave. Excitedly, I agreed. When one is born in the 80s in America, the likelihood of having ones face shaved by another person rates so low on the probability scale that its more like impossible than improbable. So when I have a chance to relive the greatness of days when men got a hot shave on the regular, I seize it like with vigor. It comes along with the same strange feeling I get to want to wear a cool three piece suit and hat and walk on the dirt-trodden street of turn of the century New York City. With a smirk of his clean-cut face, he broke out a fresh blade and went to work.

First, he smacked some shaving concentrate on my check. Wetting the brush, he began to build a lather, which eventually covered my three-day-old beard. Soon, the blade hit my face and began to scrape away the scruff. He worked it pretty fast, cleaning off my beard before doubling up for a second go-round. After, he pounded my face with some aftershave and then went in with some moisturizing lotion, massaging my face in the process. (Well, massage is a loose term that he would have used. I would use something like getting my face smacked a bit, kneaded with lotion and then smacked a bit more.) By the end Im knackered and he prepares his hands for round two with another bit of lotion. My face was feeling like it might actually begin to swell as well as being smooth and shiny. This carried on for another two minutes before I finally had to ask him to stop. Surprised, he looked at me and said, head massage? Knowing my limits, I said, no thanks. As his head waggled in response (read: I am about to massage your head whether you like it or not) I leapt from my seat and reached for my roops to settle up.

Middle school was usually pretty fun. 8th grade was not the best though, but it was way better than this year has been. I ran cross-country, played basketball, and volleyball. Really the only thing I liked about 8th grade was Mr. Hawkins, Jake, and we were the oldest, so everyone looked up to us. I started to realize who my real friends were, and others who just said they were my friend just to say they have one more friend. There was usually a lot of drama between the little 7th grade girls and 8th grade girls, but I usually found my way out of it. Another bad thing about last year was the 6th graders came out there, so we did not have teams anymore, which was the best part of middle school. Also the halls were always crowded with kids who looked young enough to still be in kindergarten. Most of the 6th and 7th graders were so immature, but there was a few that were not. Everything changed last year, new teachers, new friends, new classes, new everything. I was not excited at all. Once I think about it now, I really wish I could go back and be in middle school again. Its not that I am not ready for high school, I just miss all the times I have had with friends, and being the oldest, and everything that went on in middle school. 7th grade was one of the best years of my life. I met so many new people, made a lot of new friends, and had my first boyfriend. Everybody liked everybody, and there was no drama at all. We also won state for volleyball. I played basketball too, but we did not get very far in that. There were some bad times in middle school too. I only got to play one game for volleyball. At practice after our first game I came down on the ball, rolled my ankle, and I had to have surgery, so I was out for the season. The good thing about that was that I did not have to do P.E. I had a lot of fun in 7th grade and I would not change anything about it.

While it seems as if most students at Loyola can rattle off obscure bands and compare them to one another, I don't possess that particular talent. However, despite the fact that my musical library consists of one-hit-wonders and porno soundtracks, I do know and love the King, and I feel as if it's safe to say that since I have been a guest in his home, I am officially a friend of the family.

Way to Go Volleyball Team
I was so glad to open this up and read the positive support for our volleyball girls and their coaches. As a coach, and former coach, I know how much time coaches put in to prepare themselves and their team for competition. It saddens me that today most coaches are judged by fans and "armchair quarterbacks" solely on how many wins the team has or how much their child is playing. I truly believe that there are so many things that can be learned through participation in athletics and we are missing the most important ideas when we focus only on winning or losing. Ideals like teamwork, sacrifice and having to outwork someone for playing time. Yes, even though some of our fans want to scoff at it, ideals like sportsmanship. I would dearly love to discuss those lost ideals here, but I know that I would go on for hours. But, if anyone every wants to hear about them you know where I work...please give me a call.
With that said it is apparent that our Volleyball girls are learning some of the important lessons athletics can teach us. I am very proud of the way the "team" responded to this situation. They could have responded in the same negative manner, instead they chose to respond in a positive team building way. They've already learned that the only thing we can control is ourselves; we can't control the refs, how big the opposition is, or even fans who would rather break us down instead of helping to build us up. Way to go girls; I would guess your coaches and parents are very proud of you.
Finally, I think this site is a great idea, however there is a glitch for me. I learned long ago that if someone cannot put their name on a complaint, then the complaint really isn't worth the paper it was written on. I think that like "The Hawkeye" if you have an opinion, especially a criticism of someone else, you should put your name on it.

So I just realized that we never mentioned the trip here. That's part of the experience, right? I mean, we started in D.C. and we're exactly twelve hours ahead of them now, so we're really close to being exactly on the other side of the world. That's not something most people do on a regular basis, although my brother practically has a punch card for his trips.

Part of it is wanting to tell one of my favorite jokes. Lewis Black once said, "if you ever have the chance to visit New Zealand, my advice is: don't take it. 'Cause even after you've had a drink, a movie, a nap, a meal, another drink, and another movie, you've still got thirteen hour to go!"

I just wanted to say that flying to Taiwan, which isn't too far from New Zealand, wasn't like that at all. Marie struggled, but she has a hard time sleeping on planes, period. We got on our flight about 1 am (the China Air counter in Seatac doesn't even open until 9:30 or 10 in the evening) and about two we were airborne and I was drifting off to sleep. They had to wake me for the meal and I don't remember the attendant picking up the tray.

That was the weirdest part. After all the flying we did, from Omaha to D.C., then back to Seattle, China Air was the most accommodating airline. One airline charged us for two extra bags and you could get one drink for free. U.S. Airways charged us for all four checked bags and pop and juice all cost a couple bucks. Not even a dollar for an airline glass of pop. Two bucks. China Air fed us the minute we were at altitude. No charge, just "here's your hot meal of meat, potatoes, and mixed vegetables."

Then they came around with wine and water. I don't know the logic of the wine, and there didn't seem to be a lot of takers, but there it was.

They also had mini movie screens in the back of each headrest with a bunch of movies on tap. You can watch whatever you want, whenever. Heck, they already had "Iron Man" and it was still in theaters.

I say this 'cause Marie and I spent time and money to have plenty of books to read, and music to listen to, and charged computers to watch movies, but I didn't need any of it. Marie watched a couple of the movies the airline provided. I was asleep most of the time. But we dragged all this entertainment stuff on the plane with us, and I wouldn't suggest it.

Then, an hour before we were scheduled to land they came around with breakfast. You could pick an eastern or western breakfast. The western was a scrambled egg thing that tasted powdered, and the eastern was a porridge thing that's common here. I wonder if the porridge tasted as bad to someone from Taiwan as the eggs tasted to us. But it was a hot meal.

This was all a surprise to me 'cause we thought we'd gotten a pretty good deal for flying to the other side of the world. We were told it would cost between $600 and $1,200 apiece, and we were closer to $600, and we could've spent less but we wanted to go through Seattle. I was expecting to have to pay for a seat cushion. I wonder if China Air flys from Seattle to Phoenix?

I guess I'm telling this story in case people are interested in visiting or just thinking about flying across the Pacific. Places like New Zealand and Australia are farther 'cause they're in the southern hemisphere, but I wanted to say I was generally surprised that a twelve hour flight could be that easy. That is, if you can sleep on planes, it's unexpectedly easy. And if you have suggestions for how to sleep on a plane, we'd like to hear them.
