As weve talked a bit about several times in the last few weeks, Andy Williams and his family have recently been struck by a very serious health issues regarding Andys wife Marcia. Just a couple months ago, Marcia was diagnosed with a very rare form of Leukemia and her course of treatment calls for an aggressive and comprehensive series of treatments. Due to the complex nature of the treatments, the out-of-pocket expenses to the Williams family will be very high. As a member of the Real Salt Lake family, wed like to lend a helping hand to Andy and his family.
Tomorrows a perfect opportunity to get started. In coordination with Soccer Unites, Real Salt Lake will be present at the Juan Diego and Judge Memorial soccer team fundraiser. The two teams are setting aside their heated rivalry to lend a helping hand to the Williams family. Join us at Juan Diego where the two teams will host an evening full of fun, soccer-themed events with all proceeds from the night benefiting the Soccer Unites cause.
The nights slate kicks off at 6:00 p.m. when the boys teams from Juan Diego and Judge face off in a 20-minute match. After the boys match, the girls will take the pitch. Each team has spent the past several weeks selling $5 tickets to the nights event. upon game time, the team that has sold the most tickets will have the honor of being coached by RSL Head Coach Jason Kreis. Not to be ignored however, the opposing team will be joined on the sideline by another member of the RSL coaching staff.
The soccers not done after the girls finish up though, as the final match of the evening will pit a celebrity team against a squad of former RSL players and reserves. The celebrity squad will be led by Good Things Utahs Angie Larsen and several of the players scheduled to appear include Jacque Rimando (former professional player and wife of Nick Rimando), former RSL stars Brian Dunseth and Brian Kamler, along with the entire RSL coaching staff. This could be a match slightly more heated than your average celebrity affair, you wont want to miss it.
And what could be a better way to wrap up the evening than with a little music? Everyone who sticks around after the matches will be treated to a little jam session with current RSL players Kyle Beckerman, Chris Wingert,  and Nik Besagno, as well as former RSL man Seth Trembly. Sounds like a perfect cherry on top of a wonderful evening
So to wrap things up - Tuesday night 6:00 p.m., Juan Diego High School Stadium (300 East 11800 South, Draper), $5 per person, and a big heart.

Entering Wednesday nights contest against the University of Oklahoma, all of Baylors 10 wins this season had come with relative ease. Win 11 was a little bit harder to come by, as the Sooners battled the Bears in five sets of a 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-13 Baylor victory at the Ferrell Center.
It is the first five-set victory for Baylor since Oct. 24, 2007, and the Bears 3-0 conference start is the first in school history, including when Baylor was in the Southwest Conference.
We feel like we have got a special team, head coach Jim Barnes said. We are still not near as good as we can be yet. We just need to keep getting better.

The Baylor soccer team (4-4) will travel to San Marcos to take on Texas State University (3-3-2) at 7 p.m Friday.
The match marks the Bears first away game since they posted a 2-0 loss at the University of New Mexico August 29. The teams only other away game, against the University of Texas at El Paso, was also a loss. The Miners beat the Bears 1-0 on August 22.
Head coach Marci Jobson doesnt think the poor road record is indicative of how her team is going to play on Friday.
I dont think as much about those statistical things, she said. I really feel we need to go after Texas State. Theyre going to come after us.
Since those two road losses, the Bears have gone 4-2 at home,including a 10-1 scoring outburst against Prairie View AM University and, most recently, a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a tough University of Houston team.
I think every time you win, it builds your confidence, Jobson said. But these girls know were as good as our last game and we have a new game now.

This Saturday, September 27th our GBS boys varsity soccer team will take on Glenbrook North at 7:00PM in John Davis Stadium.

More importantly, in cooperation with the boys/girls soccer programs and peer groups of each school, we will collecting funds for the Jennifer L. Snyder Scholarship Fund.

Jennifer, a student at Glenbrook North High School, tragically passed away last month as a member of the Glenbrook United soccer team. Peer group leaders will be coming around with cups to collect funds, in return, a Moe's Southwest Grill discount coupon and a raffle ticket will be given for halftime. Those who can not attend, a Chicago Fire bucket will placed in our Business Education office in Room 182.

I grew up watching the Sound of Music, listening to a Les Miserables cassette tape and sipping wine with my mother and brother. We were all each other had and they liked to pretend like I was older than I was. I felt it, too. We took trips to Italy, learned French together, read classic novels and planned to escape from the country one day. The only people who mattered to me were the two of them and I was happy with this. I didnt need my father, who abandoned us when I was four. I didnt need , the people at my middle school who were too concerned with who wore what and who had new shoes to actually be nice or form lasting friendships. I was , too good for the bullshit that the real world held. I remember all of this, and I remember the day we packed my brothers bags as he headed to college in Colorado. I rarely saw him in the four years he was there, but he always called us, at least once a week, and even when I was a senior in high school he called me his little magician and told me I would get out of our hometown one day, just like he did. He was wrong, though. I stayed here. Mother needed me. She no longer had light in her eyes, she rarely laughed, her hair gray and her smile faded. I didnt know how to help but I knew she needed me. I went to a community college and worked hard, earning the highest grades in each class and involving myself in all of the programs and activities as I could. Mom always told me I could leave, that she was so proud of my brother and me and she couldnt ask for more. But I opted to cook her dinner every night, watch television with her until she fell asleep, talk to her in the mornings before she went to the job that she referred to as the hell hole. Then one day, my brother called from Canada. He told us he had found a nice town house and an even nicer girl, and that they were going to live there together. We were both so excited for him, and I was a little jealous that he had actually done it. He had actually escaped! I dreamed of living in other countries, having one night stands with beautiful locals and maybe even marrying one, buying a house, having our own children. The daydreams consumed me. I woke up each day, preparing outfits on what I thought my Italian boyfriend would like the most. I even cooked my mom pasta for dinner as many nights as she could handle it, so Id be ready to keep him satisfied. It was silly and I knew it, but I had to dream to keep myself sane sometimes. Finally, my brother saved me. He called and asked if mom and I would like to move to Canada. He said that he would pay for our apartment until we could get settled ourselves and he would help with any food and travel costs we needed. I begged my mother but she said that as much as she would love to escape, she could not leave her parents, her stable job, the house she had payed in full for and our horses. I was selfish but I was outraged. I was ready to leave! I told my brother I would like to come, even though mother wouldnt. He said this was fine but he asked me to think about it for a week and make sure it was what I wanted to do. Two days later, our mother died. She had a severe stroke and fell into a coma, never recovering. I was shocked, scared, guilt-ridden and alone. I had never felt such pain in my life. My brother and his girlfriend flew in for the funeral and I could barely speak to either of them, let alone the hundreds of people dressed in black who tried to comfort me. At night, after the funeral, my brother, his girlfriend and I toasted champagne to her memory. I decided instead of taking him up on his offer, I would live in the house she had left for me in her will and make my own happiness in the States. My brother agreed that this was probably the right thing to do and told me he would help me and support me in any way that he could. I still live here, and I am so delighted that I ended up staying. I met the man of my dreams (though he is not foreign!) at my local job, and we have two beautiful children together. I miss my mom every day but she is still here with me, in this house and in the spirit of the horses. I think of her every time I see a Van Gogh painting, hear Castle on a Cloud, drink strawberry wine or any other random time that she would have appreciated. I see my brother twice a year, and we are as close as we were when we were younger. I appreciate every minute I have of life, as this is the gift my mother left me with.

RICHLAND COLLEGE TO HOST TOP NJCAA SOCCER TEAMS  
IN THE NATION, NOV. 8-9
Richland College of the Dallas County Community College District will host the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association men and women Division III national soccer tournaments this fall at the Richland Soccer Complex. The top four men’s and women’s NJCAA Division III teams in the nation will compete for the 2008 national title, Nov. 8-9. 
Richland College’s men soccer team won the championship last season for the fifth time in six seasons. Richland’s women’s soccer team, which advanced to the semifinal round of the national tournament last year, has won two (2004 and 2006) of the last four women Division III national titles.
“Having the opportunity to host the NJCAA Division III national soccer tournaments is a great honor for Richland College,” said Tony Summers, Richland College athletic director. “For all of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex soccer fans, having this tournament here will present a ‘golden’ opportunity for you to watch some outstanding, competitive soccer from the best NJCAA teams in the nation.”
Richland will be hosting the first-ever Division III soccer tournament in DFW and in Texas.

If you have read this post, you may remember that I am helping my friend coach his sons soccer team (U6, mostly 5 years old, but I think there is a 4 year old and a 6 year old. Im not sure what the birthday cutoffs are.)
Our first game of the season was at 9:30 this morning. The way the U6 league works is that there are 2 games played simultaneously (on adjacent mini-fields), each with 3 players per team. Since our roster has 8 players, we assigned 4 players to each game (so I had one squad playing one game, and my friend had another squad playing on the other field), with 1 player sitting out each quarter. At least, thats the way it was supposed to work. One player on my squad didnt start the game because he had hurt himself earlier, so the boy who was supposed to sit out the first quarter went in.
Also, there was some confusion since the league had changed the schedule day before yesterday, and some coaches apparently had not checked it, so two different teams showed up to play our team.
I thought the kickoff might be chaos, with players rushing to kick the ball, but it turned out fine. The boys played well, with no tripping. (Several players fell down, but got up immediately.) My youngest player, who was rather shy during practice, scored our first goal midway through the first quarter.
We were supposed to substitute players each quarter, but since we were short a player (the boy who hurt himself), all three boys also played the second quarter.
At the end of the second quarter, the other teams coach (who definitely appears to be experienced at this) suggested that his team play one of the teams in the third quarter since my squad would be tired due to no substitutions. Since we dont keep score in this league, this would not affect anything, so we did it. (We also did this for my friends squad.)
The boy who was hurt felt fine before the fourth quarter, so he entered the game at that time.
It turned out to be a lot better than I thought. If this was chaos, it was very organized chaos. The only was the number of shoelaces that came untied during the game, so those players had to go to the sideline to have his coach retie the shoelaces.
I can only imagine how tired the kids must be. It was a 9:30 game, I was just roaming the sidelines, and I was really sweating at the end of the game  I cant wait until next week.

NBA All-Star and serious soccer fan, Steve Nash, is teaming up with former, US soccer captain, Claudio Reyna, to host the ultimate soccer pick up game tonight in Chinatown, New York. The 8-8 charity game will be played at the Nike field at the Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Chrystie Street (between Rivington and Stanton Streets). Admission is free and the action starts at 5:30pm. In Santander today, the U.S. Soccer Team fell to Spain 1-0. But for the first half at least, the U.S. looked dangerous and even capable of pulling out the win. It was markedly better than last weeks game against England. There were a couple of reasons for this:
1) Freddy Adu. Freddy has been so over-hyped for so long its sometimes hard to remember hes only 18 and still on his way up. He has great touch on the ball and great vision; he was able to control the midfield for stretches in the first halfand against a team as good as Spain thats impressive. Hes a wee one though, and you have to wonder about his durability. He was subbed at the half, presumable after picking up a knock. Freddy needs to strength-train until hes a compact rock like Edgar Davids in his prime. He should also be on our first-11 moving forward. Finding a way to pair him with Landon Donovan is key to any successful attacking play as the U.S. moves towards South Africa 2010.
2) Maurice Edu. Mo is poised. Where our other center midfielders (Clark and Bradley) tend to freak out under pressure, Edu was able to hold possession or even turn into space. It was reminiscent of Reyna at his best. He also kept popping up in key positions to stymie Spanish build-ups and seemed the least tired of our midfielders at the end. If Mo plays like this, he should be center midfielder option #1.

A recent article published in USA Today explains how a trend is developing across the country limiting kid's physical activity in schools. Many districts are banning more and more games in PE and on recess.

To make matters worse many middle schools and high schools are cutting PE from the full year curriculum. The report showed that the number of students attending a daily PE class is down to 28%! Does this have anything to do with the fact the 1 out of 5 school age kids today are overweight? Along with horrible diets of most kids, the lack of sufficient physical activity is a huge part of the problem.

Many schools cite the need for more academic class time in order to meet the requirements of national testing standards. The irony of it is that cutting PE programs is actually making our student's test performance worse. A large Canadian study looked at the academic performance of kids split into two groups. One group received one hour of PE class with moderate physical activity during the course of the day, while the other group had academic instruction for that hour.

At the end of the year, the group of kids that had PE outperformed the other group in academic classes for every grade tested. This was true even though the non-PE group received about 15% more classroom instruction time. So does it make sense to cut PE from our schools?

Physical activity is proven to increase attention, improve learning and improve memory. These are all attributes that help kids become better students. Yet our schools continue to cut PE from their curriculum. We must put greater value on physical activity in the school system and find a way to support it.

As the Canadian study suggests, physical activity can actually make you smarter. Not only that, but exercise can help prevent disorders like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and depression. It can even increase your chances of recovering from a stroke or traumatic brain injury.

Exercise causes a rise in several growth factors in the brain that are responsible for helping brain cells survive and divide into new brain cells, or neurons. One of the brain areas producing new neurons is the hippocampus. The hippocampus plays a critical role in learning, memory and attention. Exercise helps new neurons grow in the hippocampus, which helps improve performance on several types of cognitive tasks.

Another important role of the hippocampus is in the response to stress. In fact, studies show that a smaller hippocampus is associated with anxiety disorders and depression. Stress can damage the hippocampus and cause neurons to die, the opposite of what happens when you exercise.
